Fourth Quarter Surge Not Enough as Pioneer Women Fall to Coyotes, 62-59

HAYWARD, Calif., -- For the first time in eight games, the Cal State East Bay women's basketball team found themselves on the losing end after falling to Cal State San Bernardino, 62-59 Thursday night inside Pioneer Gymnasium.

For the Pioneers, it was their first loss in Pioneer Gymnasium this season and their first defeat in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action. CSUEB moves to 8-3 overall on the season with a 4-1 mark in conference play.

Despite the final outcome of the contest, the Pioneers defense was outstanding yet again. For the sixth consecutive game, CSUEB held their opponent under 40 percent shooting for the ball game. East Bay forced 24 turnovers from San Bernardino that they converted into 15 points. But the Pioneers had trouble taking care of the ball themselves as they committed 26 turnovers that the Coyotes turned into 22 points.

Delia Moore scored a game high 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting, as she also swiped a career-high five steals. Moore added four rebounds and four assists, while knocking down both of her foul shots.

East Bay trailed most of the game, even falling behind as far as 10 late in the third quarter. But the Pioneers opened the fourth quarter on an 9-0 run to take a 55-53 lead. But that would be CSUEB's final lead of the evening. A Delia Moore steal and layup would tie the game at 59-59 with just under 14 seconds to play. But an East Bay technical foul with 14 seconds left would give the Coyotes two shots and the ball that led to them taking a lead they would not relinquish.

Morgan Greene helped the Pioneers hold the rebounding advantage over the Coyotes, 38-29 as she corralled a season-best 14 boards, including seven offensive rebounds. Greene chipped in eight points, three assists, two blocks and two steal across 35 minutes of action. In total, CSUEB notched 13 second chance points.

Seniors Madison Schiller and Kayley Hsiung each compiled nine points apiece. Schiller dished out a team-high five assists with four rebounds. She was a major presence on the defensive end collected three steals and blocking two shots. Hsiung pulled down two rebounds while playing 30 minutes of action. Faith Turner turned in tallied eight points with on 4-of-6 shooting from the field while bringing down six rebounds and contributing a career-best four assists.

East Bay will look to put this game behind them as they will be back in Pioneer Gymnasium Saturday afternoon for a CCAA contest against one of the top teams in the conference in Humboldt State.
