Sophomore
Annika Blom's goal 42 seconds into overtime lifted the Cal State East Bay women's soccer team to a thrilling road victory Thursday evening, defeating Chico State, 3-2.
A sophomore from Modesto, Calif., Blom knocked in a shot off a corner kick in the 91st
minute to help the Pioneers keep pace in the conference standings. The win propels Cal State East Bay (6-8-3, 5-5-1 CCAA) into sixth place with one game remaining, as the top six advance to the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament beginning on Tuesday, Nov. 12.
Thursday's win also snaps Chico State's 29-match unbeaten streak against CSUEB, which had not defeated the Wildcats since Nov. 4, 1989, according to Chico State's sports information department.
The game's first 90 minutes were highlighted by goals from juniors
Riley Spitzer and
Lauren McDougal. McDougal sent the contest into overtime with her goal off a free kick in the 84th
minute that knotted the score, 2-2.
Spitzer had the response for the Pioneers in the first half, as the Roseville, Calif., native's goal in the 27th
minute tied the game 1-1 after Chico State jumped ahead early in the sixth minute.
Spitzer recorded a team-high eight shots, with six on target. Freshman
Kayla Morales also had a shot on goal, while freshman goalkeeper
Jordan Smith finished with three saves.
Cal State East Bay wraps up regular-season play with another key conference matchup on Saturday, Nov. 9, as the Pioneers take on No. RV Stanislaus State beginning at 2 p.m.
