HAYWARD, Calif., -- The Cal State Women's Basketball wrapped up their exhibition season with an 89-58 victory over Menlo College, Saturday night inside Pioneer Gymnasium.
Â
The Pioneer were able to find their offense as they shot 50% (28-for-56) from the field for the ball game, including an impressive 17-for-20 (85%) from the charity stripe. East Bay defense was stellar all night as they held the Oaks to just 36% (18-for-50) shooting from the floor.
Â
Head Coach
Shanele Stires was really impressed with her team overall effort and on both ends of the floor through their two exhibition contests.
Â
"I think tonight, especially in the second half we tapped into the best version of ourselves," said Stires. "We were focused. We were determined and we showed the kind of character I know that we have. We have a lot of new faces that are trying to establish themselves and the last two nights have been a huge step forward for that. I'm proud of the way we shared the basketball and played defense. Those are the things we can continue to build on moving forward into the regular season."
Â
Seniors
Regina Sankey and
Kayley Hsiung paced the Pioneers in the game as they both notched double figures. Sankey led all scorers with 22 points, while going 7-for-8 from the foul line. Hsuing tied Sankey for the team lead with a trio of three-pointers made to go along with four rebounds and two assists.
Â
Junior
Faith Turner also turned in a huge performance with 16 points on a perfect 6-for-6 shooting from the field. Turner added two rebounds, a block and two free throws made.
Â
Celeste Almendarez was a presence all over the court tonight and although she did not record a made basket, she dished out six assists and grabbed seven rebounds while swiping two steals.
Â
Morgan Greene chipped in nine points and two rebounds.
Delia Moore compiled seven points and corralled four rebounds. Newcomer
Madison Adams scored six points with two shots from long distance.
Â
'Our young guard play is coming along and I'm proud of the way
Celeste Almendarez,
Zhane Duckett and
Delia Moore are handling the ball and handling the pressure," expressed Stires. "One thing we're discovering about ourselves is that we are pretty deep. The quality depth in a long season really gives a team an advantage late in the CCAA season.
Faith Turner had a big night for us and
Regina Sankey played at an All-Conference level tonight. It was fun to watch. But now it's time keep watching film, get back to the drawing board and now we have a good week to get focused and prepare for Concordia (Ore.) and Western Oregon."
Â
The Pioneers will open the 2019-20 season in the Western Oregon Conference Challenge with games against Concordia (Ore.) and Western Oregon.
