HAYWARD, Calif., -- The Cal State East Bay volleyball team secured the season series sweep over Humboldt State on Sunday afternoon, with a 3-1 victory in the final game at Pioneer Gymnasium this season.
Â
The Pioneers picked up their second consecutive California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) victory in what was scored as a home game for the Lumberjacks. The win keeps CSUEB's hopes of notching a fourth CCAA Tournament berth alive as they head into the final week of the 2019 regular season.
Â
The tone was established early, as the opening set was perhaps even more one-sided than the 25-16 score would suggest. The Pioneers opened the match on a 13-7 run and never looked back, making only two attack errors in the frame and holding HSU to a .156 hitting percentage.
Â
In game two, as Humboldt State used a 13-5 run to pull away midway through the set, East Bay fought back to pull with four points trailing just 17-21. But the Pioneers wouldn't score another point as the Lumberjacks would tie the match at 1-1 with a 25-17 set win.
Â
But that would be the lone set win of the afternoon for Humboldt State. The final two sets were dominated by the Pioneers. CSUEB opened the third set on a 10-2 run as they cruised to a 25-12 set victory. In the final frame of the afternoon, the two squads traded runs in the back and forth action. With the Pioneers leading 9-6, East Bay surge ahead 17-9 with an 8-3 run. The Lumberjacks responded with an 9-1 rally to lock the game at 18-18.
Â
Then the Pioneers caught momentum once again with a 5-0 rally of their own to take a 23-18 advantage. But Humboldt State would not bow out of the match easily putting together one final run to knot the match at 23-23. But East Bay captured the final two points and the match victory.
