ARCATA, Calif. — The Pioneers continue to blaze a new trail.
The No. 12-ranked Cal State East Bay women's cross country team finished second overall at the 2019 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships at Baywood Golf and Country Club.
The second-place finish is the best in program history, as sophomore
Angie Ronquillo and junior
Claire Fisher both earned All-CCAA honors. The previous best team finish for the Pioneers was fifth, as the top-15 finishers earn all-conference accolades.
"We executed about as well as we could, but the team was still pretty emotional after and it felt bittersweet," said head coach
Tony Nicolosi. "That just shows how competitive they are. They have high standards for themselves."
Cal State East Bay earned 81 points to finish behind Chico State (23) and ahead of third-place Cal Poly Pomona (101).
Ronquillo placed second overall after crossing the finish line in 22-minutes, 6.46-seconds, while junior
Claire Fisher earned seventh place with a time of 22:30.76. The previous best individual finish for a Pioneer was seventh.
"They were absolutely fantastic," said Nicolosi. "They are All-America caliber runners and ran an All-America caliber race today."
Senior
Andrea Romero took 18th in 22:58.18, sophomore
Amanda Navarro was 35th in 23:22.30 and junior
Lauryn Orozco placed 48th in 23:47.05.
Ronquillo finished just four seconds behind first-place finisher Destiny Everett of Chico State (22:02.55) and ahead of Chico State's third-overall finisher Gracie Dupuis (22:07.78).
Cal State East Bay returns to action at the NCAA West Regional, set for Nov. 9 in Monmouth, Ore.
