Top-Ranked Coyotes Power Past Pioneers, 3-0

HAYWARD, Calif., -- The Cal State East Bay volleyball team put up a valiant effort against No. 1 ranked Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes but ultimately fell 3-0, Friday night inside Pioneer Gymnasium.
 
The young Pioneers move to 4-14 on the season with a 3-7 mark in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action as the Coyotes remain undefeated at 18-0 with an 11-0 showing in conference play.
 
For East Bay, it was just their first loss in Hayward through their last four matches. The Pioneers turned in a solid effort against the best team in Division II, hitting .082 with 21 attack errors in the match. However, the CSUSB attackers were simply too much to overcome as they posted a .265 hitting percentage and added five service aces.
 
In the opening set, the teams traded the lead back and forth several times. But the Coyotes rattled off six straight points to seize a 25-13 win. The second set saw San Bernardino jump out to an early 6-1 lead that they did not relinquish as they cruised to a 25-16 victory. In the final set, the Pioneers put a bit of pressure on the top ranked Coyotes as they trailed 20-19 with momentum on their side. But after four consecutive points from San Bernardino the ultimately took the set 25-21 and the match victory.
 
East Bay had an inspired performance the entire match. Eliza Cannon notched a double-double with 22 assists and 11 kills on a team best .333 hitting percentage. She also added two kills and three points.
 
Kara Green paced the Pioneers with 10 kills to go along with nine digs. Green racked up four blocks and 13.5 point, both team-highs. Sarah Stevelinck collected a team-best 13 digs in the contest.
 
Kelly Jing-min Markham notched six kills and six points and Steena Hubbard tallied five kills and three blocks. Samantha Zimmerman added four kills and three digs.
 
The Pioneers will be back in Pioneer Gymnasium as they play host to the visiting Cal Poly Pomona Broncos. The match begins at 7:00 p.m.
