HAYWARD, Calif., -- The Cal State East Bay women's soccer team will host non-conference opponent Holy Names for a West Region showdown on Saturday evening, September 29 at Pioneer Stadium.
This will be CSUEB's last home game for the month of September and their last home contest against a non-CCAA opponent.
WEEK IN REVIEW
The Cal State East Bay women's soccer team battled Stanislaus State Warriors to a 1-1 draw in their California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) home opener at Pioneer Stadium Friday evening, September 21.
In the second half, the Pioneers broke the scoreless bid as senior
Aulani Fernandez (Brentwood, Calif.) put in a booming right footed boot just over the goalkeepers reach from 40 yards out on a pass from from junior
Jamie McPherson (San Leandro, Calif.). For Fernandez it was her first goal of the 2018 season as McPherson notched her second helper of the year.
Aulani Fernandez and
Savannah Schultz (Folsom, Calif.) led Cal State East Bay with three shots apiece. Both Fernandez and Schultz took two shots on goal.
Abby Buitrago (San Jose, Calif.) and
Liz Hernandez (Whittier, Calif.) each attempted two shots with two shots on goal from Hernandez and one from Buitrago. Chase Miguel (Hollister, Calif.) and
Jordan Lemieux (Bothell, Wash.) both chipped one shot each.
Freshman
Briana Vasquez-Ortiz (Long Beach, Calif.) played all 110 minutes of action and compiled two saves while allowing one goal.
The Cal State East Bay women's soccer team was narrowly edge out in their, 2-1 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) loss to visiting Chico State on Sunday afternoon, September 23 at Pioneer Stadium.
The Pioneers would unleash a ferocious comeback attempt in the second half of action. They were rewarded with a goal in the 59th minute as senior
Chace Miguel (Hollister, Calif.) put in a shot on an excellent pass from sophomore
Lauren McDougal (Elk Grove, Calif.). For Miguel it was her third goal of the season which is second on the team. As for McDougal, it was her first assist of the 2018 season.
Chace Miguel and
Savannah Schultz (Folsom, Calif.) each tallied three shots on goal to lead the Pioneers.
Aulani Fernandez (Brentwood, Calif.) added two shots with both attempted on goal.
Jordan Lemieux (Bothell, Wash.) and
Jamie McPherson (San Leandro, Calif.) both chipped in one shot on goal each while
Abby Buitrago (San Jose, Calif.) and
Eliana Mendoza (Tracy, Calif.) compiled one shot apiece.
Freshman
Briana Vasquez-Ortiz (Long Beach, Calif.) recorded three saves while allowing two goals through 90 minutes of game action.
PIONEER POINTS
The Pioneers got off to a 5-0 to the season which is the program's best start since joining the CCAA. Cal State East Bay had only allowed one goal through those five games.
Abby Buitrago (San Jose, Calif.) leads the Pioneers with four goals scored which are fourth in the conference. Buitrago's nine points are also fourth in the CCAA and her three game-winning goals it tied for 10th in the nation.
Chace Miguel (Hollister, Calif.) is second on the Pioneers with three goals and seven points. Miguel leads the squad with two goals in CCAA action and she has one assist on the season.
Keionna Claypoole (Sacramento, Calif.) and
Jordan Lemieux (Bothell, Wash.) have two assists apiece to lead the Pioneers.
Freshman goalkeeper
Briana Vasquez-Ortiz (Long Beach, Calif.) has racked up 28 saves and four shutouts. Vasquez-Ortiz is tied for the the conference lead with four shutouts.
SCOUTING HOLY NAMES
The Holy Names Hawks enter the weekend contest against East Bay with a 1-5 record after losses to San Francisco State and Dominican. Abbi Alexander leads the Hawks with one goal, one assist and three points. Nyah Summers leads Holy Names with 36 saves through four games of action.
