GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- The Cal State East Bay women's golf team opened the 2018-19 season this week with a solid performance at Western New Mexico's Fall Intercollegiate, finishing tied for eighth place out of 19 teams.
The Pioneers turned in team scores of 306 (+18) on Monday and 302 (+13) on Tuesday for a 36-hole total of 607 (+31) at the par-72 Golf Club of Estrella. They beat 10 teams, finished even with Biola, and were just a few strokes behind conference rivals Sonoma State (+25) in fourth and Cal State Monterey Bay (+29) in sixth. Defending CCAA champion Cal State San Marcos won the tournament, shooing one stroke under par as a team.
It was an outstanding collegiate debut for freshmanÂ
Drishti Karumbaya, who earned a share of third place in the overall field of 99 golfers. The native of Mysore, India led the Pioneers with rounds of 71 (-1) and 72 (-1) for a total of 143 (-1). She was one of just four golfers in the field under par, finishing three stroke behind the individual champion.
Senior
Carolin Chang turned in a consistent effort coming off a junior campaign in which she was named CCAA Newcomer of the Year. She carded 76 (+4) in round one and 75 (+3) in round two to earn a share of 29th place with a total of 151 (+7).
Fellow Taiwan native
Vivian Yen made her Pioneer debut this weekend, posting impressive results. The freshman shot 79 (+7) to open the tournament, then followed it up with a 76 (+4) this morning to move up the leaderboard into 45th place at 155 (+11).
Senior
Hafsa Khan stumbled a bit with an 83 (+11) on Monday, but bounced back on Tuesday to contribute to East Bay's team score with a 78 (+6). Khan notched a share of 74th place with a total of 161 (+17).Â
Lulu Huang shot 80 (+8) for CSUEB's fourth team score in round one, then closed tournament with a second-round 83 (+11). The senior finished a couple stroke behind Khan, tied for 81st place at 163 (+19).Â
Next week, the Pioneers continue their Fall schedule with a trip to southwest Utah for the Dixie State Invitational on Oct .1-2 at Sand Hallow Resort.Â
