SAN FRANCISCO
-- The Cal State East Bay men's cross country team raced Friday on a chilly afternoon at the annual SF State Invitational in Golden Gate Park.

The Pioneers only entered four runners and therefore did not register a team score, but the student-athletes who competed turned in strong performances on a tough course.

Seniors Israel Sotelo and Esteban Leon led the way, running together for the entire 8k race and finishing just inside the top-20. The pair notched identical times of 26:40.8 to earn 19th and 20th place out of 101 individuals.

Redshirt freshman Luke Calubayan ran a strong race as well, taking 33rd place with a time of 27:09.1. Junior Ronaldo Flores rounded out East Bay's performance by finishing 60th in 28:14.7.

"The men had a great day," said head coach Tony Nicolosi. "We tempoed as a team to prepare for a big challenge next week. It's a young, inexperienced group, but they are growing up very fast. I look forward to seeing how we stack up against several of the teams in our conference at our next meet."

The Pioneers will be back in action next week against a strong field of teams Saturday, Sept. 29 at Sacramento State's annual Capital Cross Challenge at Haggin Oaks Golf Course.
