East Bay Women's Soccer Face Off Against San Marcos, UCSD To Begin CCAA Play

HAYWARD, Calif., -- The Cal State East Bay women's soccer team will open California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) with a match against Cal State San Marcos on Friday, September 14 at 12:30 p.m. in The Cage. The Pioneers will wrap up the weekend with a game against UC San Diego on Sunday, September 16 at Triton Soccer Stadium at 2:00 p.m.
 
WEEK IN REVIEW
The Cal State East Bay women's soccer team improved to 3-0 on the season after a, 2-1 home win over Dominican University Wednesday afternoon, September 5 at Pioneer Stadium.
 
The first half of action was stout defensively as momentum shifted from team to team throughout the period. The teams took a 0-0 tie into the intermission with the Pioneers attempting four shots to just two shots from the Penguins.
 
But the Pioneers answered with back-to-back goals within a minute to take a lead they would not relinquish.
 
Sophomore Abby Buitrago (San Jose, Calif.) scored her team-leading third goal of the season as she played a perfectly placed pass from senior Eliana Mendoza (Tracy, Calif.) into the back of the net to knot the game at 1-1. Buitrago is tied for the CCAA lead with three goals and six points. For Mendoza, it was her first helper of the 2018 season.
 
Cal State East Bay would claim a 2-1 lead 49 second later as Lauren McDougal (Elk Grove, Calif.) complied her first goal of the season. McDougal knocked in her shot to the right side of the goal after she received an excellent pass from junior Keionna Claypoole (Sacramento, Calif.). For Claypoole it was her assist of the year.
 
Freshman goalkeeper Briana Vasquez-Ortiz (Long Beach, Calif.) logged all 90 minutes in the box and compiled a career best eight saves. The Pioneers have yet to allow a goal on the season.
 
The Cal State East Bay women's soccer team improved to 4-0 in their first true road test of the 2018 campaign after defeating Colorado Mesa, 1-0 Friday evening, September 7 at Walker Field.
 
Freshman Kayla Morales (San Jose, Calif.) scored her first goal of the 2018 season as she crossed in from right, headed down and blasted in the shot from 12 yards out. Morales was assisted on the goal by senior Miranda Gonzalez (Santa Rosa, Calif.) and junior newcomer Keionna Claypoole (Sacramento, Calif.).
 
Freshman goalkeeper Briana Vasquez-Ortiz (Long Beach, Calif.) compiled her third shutout of the season as she finished the match with one save.
 
The Cal State East Bay women's soccer team wrapped up their non-conference road trip with a, 1-0 victory over Western State at Walker Field Sunday afternoon, Saturday 9.
 
With the win the Pioneers move to 5-0 on the season which surpasses their win total from the previous two seasons. CSUEB is off to their best start since joining the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).
 
Sophomore Abby Buitrago (San Jose, Calif.) scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season to secure the Pioneers victory. Buitrago is tied for the CCAA lead in goals (4) and is tops in the conference with game-winning goals (3).
 
Freshman goalkeeper Briana Vasquez-Ortiz (Long Beach, Calif.) logged her fourth shutout in five games as she finished the game with six saves. Vasquez-Ortiz leads the conference lead with four shutouts as she has only allowed one goal through five games and 450 minutes played.
 
PIONEER POINTS
The Pioneers 5-0 start is the program's best start since joining the CCAA. Cal State East Bay has only allowed one goal through five games this season.
 
Abby Buitrago (San Jose, Calif.) leads the Pioneers with four goals scored which is tied for the conference lead and tied for eight in the NCAA. Buitrago's eight points in second in the CCAA and her three game-winning goals it tied for first in the nation.
 
Freshman goalkeeper Briana Vasquez-Ortiz (Long Beach, Calif.) has only allowed one goal through five games this season while racking up 16 saves. Vasquez-Ortiz leads the conference with a .200 goal per game average. She has recorded four shutouts. 
 
SCOUTING CAL STATE SAN MARCOS
The Cougars have started the season 1-2-1 with a tie against Biola and a loss to Point Loma over the past week of action. Hannah Arcala and Madisen Bivens are tied for the team lead with one goal apiece. Elizabeth Maass has the team's lone assist on the season. Bailey Cockrill leads CSUSM with 13 saves through four game played.
 
SCOUTING UC SAN DIEGO
The Tritons have begun the season 4-0-1 with wins over the University of Hawai'i and Hawai'i Hilo over the past week. Maddy Samilo is tops on the team with two goals. UCSD has five different players with one assist apiece. Angelica Ramos has 12 saves through five games for the Tritons.
