DURANGO, Colo. -- Cal State East Bay junior
Carolin Chang earned a share of 30th place individually this week at 2018 NCAA Division II Super Regionals, turning in a 54-hole score of 234 (+18) at the par-72 Hillcrest Golf Club.Â
The Taiwan native, who was named California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Newcomer of the Year in her first season with CSUEB after transferring from Santa Barbara City College, was selected to compete at Super Regionals alongside the top 12 teams and five other individuals from the West and South-Central Regions after ranking among the top 25 golfers in the nation during the regular season.
Tournament champion Dallas Baptist advances to NCAA Championships, as does second-place West Texas A&M and third-place California Baptist. The top three individuals not associated with a qualifying team also advance to nationals.Â
Chang notched a strong performance this week to finish in the top half of a talented field of 66 golfers. She carded 78 (+6) on Monday in the opening round, then followed that up with a 77 (+5) on Tuesday. Heading into Wednesday's final round, she was just three strokes back of a potentials spot in the national championship field.Â
As it turned out, Chang would've needed to shoot her best round of the season to even have a chance, as several players posted low numbers in round three. She shot 79 (+7) to close out the tournament and put a bow on an outstanding junior season.
