TURLOCK, Calif.
-- The 2017-18 Cal State East Bay men's golf team appears to be peaking at the right time. The Pioneers turned in their best round of the season Monday afternoon and finished this week's Hanny Stanislaus Invitational with their best 54-hole score of the year to take third place in the 13-team field.

CSUEB shot 299 (+11) Monday morning, following by a season-low 286 (-2) in round two. They closed out the tournament on Tuesday with a 294 (+6) to finish at 879 (+15) overall.

The Pioneers were eight strokes behind champion Cal Baptist and just two strokes back from the host Warriors in second place. East Bay beat 10 teams, including No. 15 ranked Chico State and five other California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) squads.

Junior Declan Illingsworth had his best tournament of the season to lead the Pioneers and notch a third place individual finish. He was the best player in the entire field on par-four holes (-3) and led CSUEB with 11 total birdies.

The Liverpool, England native shot 75 (+3) in round one, then followed that up with a 69 (-3) Monday afternoon, his lowest round of the season. He wrapped up the week with a 71 (-1) Tuesday for a total score of 215 (-1), putting him just three strokes behind the individual medalist.

Will Barnett was also outstanding for CSUEB, carding rounds of 72 (E), 73 (+1), and 74 (+2) to notch his third top-10 individual finish of the season with a total of 219 (+3).

Fellow junior Jonathan Mulvany continues to play his best golf of the year down the stretch. After a 78 (+6) in round one, he was excellent in the final two rounds, firing scores of 72 (E) and 74 (+2) to earn a share of 24th place in the overall field of 77 golfers with a total of 224 (+8).

Sophomore Max Murai was five strokes behind, finishing in a tie for 44th at 229 (+13). The left-hander turned in his best card when the team needed it most, as Murai's first-round score of 74 (+2) was second-lowest on the team for that round. He closed out with 79 (+7) Monday afternoon and 76 (+4) Tuesday morning.

Reigning CCAA Player of the Week Greg Smith stumbled in round one with an 83 (+11), although it didn't hurt the team significantly because the other four golfers had solid scores. He bounced back and was outstanding in the last two rounds with scores of 72 (E) and 75 (+3) to help the Pioneers climb near the top of the leaderboard. Smith's total of 230 (+14) gave him a share of 47th place.

Chase Wickman competed for the Pioneers as an individual and turned in his best 54-hole score of the season with a 235 (+19). He carded scores of 77 (+5), 80 (+8), and 78 (+6) to finish in 62nd place overall.

Cal State East Bay has now concluded its regular season, with the team's two best performances coming in the two most recent tournaments. The Pioneers will now prepare for CCAA Championships, held Apr. 23-25 at Butte Creek Country Club in Chico.
