Tritons Strike Early to Top Pioneers in Series Finale

LA JOLLA, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay baseball team dropped the finale of its four-game series at UC San Diego on Saturday by a final score of 11-1 after the Tritons scored nine runs in the first three innings.

With the win, UCSD takes three out of four from the Pioneers in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. East Bay falls to 14-16 overall with an 11-13 conference record, but remain very much in the thick of the postseason race just past the midway point of the regular season.

The Tritons tallied 10 hits in Saturday's finale and took advantage of nine free passes from Pioneer pitching. They scored two runs in the first and five in the second to grab a quick lead, highlighted by a three-run triple by Steven Schuknecht and a home run by Nick Kitzmann.

The Pioneers were never able to mount a significant rally, as a trio of UCSD pitchers combined to allow just six hits and one walk. Juniors Nicholas Enrico and Steve Robinson led the way offensively for East Bay, each finishing 2-for-4. It was Robinson who knocked in the team's only run of the day with an RBI single in the fifth inning.

Donavon Ramirez started the game for CSUEB and took the loss after giving up five runs in 1.1 innings of work. The game was already out of hand by the time Jacob Call entered, but the senior was excellent in relief, allowing just one hit in 4.0 scoreless frames.

The Pioneers will look to get back in the win column when they return home to Hayward next week for a four-game series against Cal Poly Pomona. But prior to that on Tuesday evening, East Bay will drive out to Banner Island Ballpark in Stockton -- the site of the 2018 CCAA Tournament -- for a scrimmage game against the Stockton Ports, the Class 'A' minor league affiliate of the Oakland Athletics.
