PLEASANTON, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay women's golf team had a strong effort on Tuesday to notch an eighth place finish out of 17 teams this week at CSUEB's home tournament, the 2018 Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout.Â
After a team total of 332 (+44) in Monday's first round, the Pioneers shot 321 (+33) at the par-72 Callippe Preserve Golf Club on Tuesday to finish the 36-hole event at 653 (+77).
This was the first time East Bay hosted this annual tournament at Callippe. The course played tough and scores were fairly high across the board, with California Baptist (+35) capturing the team title by three strokes over Academy of Art. The Pioneers beat nine schools, including conference rivals Chico State and Cal State LA.Â
Junior
Carolin Chang was once again CSUEB's top finisher, turning in one of the best rounds in the field on Tuesday to climb up the leaderboard and secure a ninth-place individual finish. Chang carded rounds of 79 (+7) and 76 (+4) for a two-day total of 155 (+11). She was eight strokes behind the individual medalist, Jamie Jacobs of Cal State San Marcos.Â
Julia Youn also improved from the first round to the second to finish just outside of the top 20. The senior shot 82 (+10) and 77 (+5) and earned a share of 21st place with a total of 159 (+15).
East Bay's next two finishers competed as individuals and did not contribute to the team score, but both
Hafsa Khan and
Sienna Starck had solid performances to finish tied for 47th and 52nd, respectively, in the field of 97 golfers. Khan shot 82-84 for a total of 166 (+22), while Starck went 80-88 to finish two strokes back at 168 (+24).
Two strokes behind her was
Jamie Enseki, who had success on Monday with an 81 (+9), but stumbled with an 89 (+17) on Tuesday to finish tied for 58th at 170 (+26).
Taylor Wyss and
Lulu Huang had nearly identical contributions for the Pioneers. Both shot 90 (+18) in round one, and both came back to card 84 (+12) in round two to finish tied for 69th place with a total of 174 (+30).Â
Angela Dayrit improved by 15 strokes from her first round to her second, following up a 101 (+29) with an 84 (+12) to move up to 87th place and round out East Bay'd week with a total of 187 (+43).Â
After a week off, the Pioneers are back in action Mar. 19-20 against another conference foe as they compete in Cal State Monterey Bay's Otter Invitational at Poppy Hills Golf Course on Pebble Beach.
