PLEASANTON, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay men's golf team finished in a tie for 12th place out of 17 teams this week at its home tournament, the 2018 Tim Tierney Pioneers Shootout.Â
The Pioneers improved each round at the par-72 Golf Club at Ruby Hill, turning in team scores of 308 (+20), 305 (+17), and 298 (+10) for a 54-hole total of 911 (+47). They were even with Academy of Art, one stroke behind Stanislaus State, and two back of Cal State San Bernardino.
Colorado-Colorado Springs (+6) captured the team title by three strokes over Cal State Monterey Bay and Saint Edward's. This was the first time CSUEB hosted this annual tournament at Ruby Hill, and it played difficult on the first day.Â
After a frost delay Monday morning, scores were high during the first two rounds. The second round was suspended due to darkness, leaving groups to play the final couple holes Tuesday morning before beginning the final round. Scores were lower Tuesday, with more than 20 players at even-par or better. UCCS's Tanner Comes shot 65 to make a run up the leaderboard, but he couldn't quite catch teammate and individual medalist Colin Prater, who shot three rounds under par to finish -7.Â
Will Barnett was the top individual for the Pioneers, finishing just outside the top 20 in the overall field of 96 golfers. After stumbling to an 80 (+8) in the first round, he bounced back with a 73 (+1) followed by a 70 (-2) to finish with a solid three-round total of 223 (+7).Â
Declan Illingsworth also finished the tournament strong, following a first-round 79 (+7) with a 76 (+4) Monday evening and then a 73 (+1) Tuesday morning. The junior finished with a share of 39th place at 228 (+12).
Two strokes behind him were
Jonathan Mulvany and
Raja Deal in a tie for 47th place. Mulvany was excellent in the opening round with a 73 (+1). He notched a 77 (+5) and an 80 (+8) to close out the week at 230 (+14). Deal reached that same total playing as an individual, carding scores of 81 (+9) and 80 (+8) in the first two trips around the course, before turning in the lowest round by any Pioneer in the tournament with a 69 (-3) on Tuesday.
Greg Smith got a share of 60th place after shooting 80-79-75 in the three rounds for a total of 234 (+18). He was followed closely by
Chris Carney and
Grayson Sorci tied for 66th at 235 (+19). The former fired 76-79-80 for the week, while the latter shot 82-76-77 competing as an individual.
Max Murai was unattached as well, finishing in a tie for 79th at 240 (+24). Like most of his teammates, Murai had his best showing Tuesday, following an 80 (+8) and an 83 (+11) with a final-round 77 (+5).Â
