Chang Takes 3rd in Loaded Field to Lead CSUEB at Barry Invite

MIAMI LAKES, Fla.
-- The Cal State East Bay women's golf team had a solid week at the Barry University Invitational, finishing in 13th place out of 17 teams in an extremely strong field on the Senator Course at Don Shula's Golf Club.

Five of the top six teams in the nation and 13 of the top 50 according to Golfstat competed at this tournament. The Pioneers turned in team scores of 319 (+31), 310 (+22), and 316 (+28) for a three-round total of 945 (+81) to finish ahead of four squads, including No. 30 ranked Tampa.

Carolin Chang led CSUEB was a phenomenal performance, improving her play each round. After a 75 (+3) in round one, she fired scores of 72 (E) and 71 (-1) in the final two rounds, with her Tuesday score ranking as the second-lowest on the course. The junior's total of 218 (+2) was good for third place in the overall field of 89 golfers, four strokes behind the individual medalist.

This tournament featured 38 of the top 100 individuals in the nation according to Golfstat. Even more impressively, eight of the 10 best golfers in the nation were in competition -- and Chang beat seven of them.

Senior Julia Youn was East Bay's second finisher, taking a share of 61st place. She turned in scores of 79 (+7), 78 (+6), and 82 (+10) to finish the week at 239 (+23). 

The final three Pioneers all finished within three strokes of each other for the tournament. Sienna Starck was the only one of the trio to break 80, posting an excellent second-round total of 76 (+4). Starck shot 85-76-85 for a total of 246 (+30) and 67th place in the overall field.

Two strokes back was Lulu Huang, who went 82-85-81 to finish the event at 248 (+32) in 78th place. She was one spot ahead of Hafsa Khan, who took 79th at 249 (+33) with a consistent performance, shooting 83-84-82 in the three rounds. 

Next up, the Pioneers travel to Goodyear, Ariz. for the annual Western New Mexico Mustang Intercollegiate on Apr. 9-10, the final regular season tournament before CCAA Championships.
