Pioneers Win Finale, 14-5, to Claim Second Straight Series Victory

HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay baseball team exploded offensively Sunday on a clear, chilly day at Pioneer Field, defeating Cal State San Marcos by a score of 14-5 in the finale of the four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) series between the two teams.

The Pioneers have now won six of their last eight games, claiming their second straight series victory to even their record at 13-13 overall wth a 10-10 mark in conference play.

The CSUEB bats tallied 15 hits in the victory, including a season-high four triples as the squad took advantage of the cavernous gaps in right-center and left-center at Pioneer Field. Dakota Conners had two of those triples, finishing 2-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in. Raymond Jones and Adam Hollar both stayed hot with three-hit performances, as the former went 3-for-3 with a walk and four RBI, while the latter finished 3-for-4 with a stolen base.

After the Cougars plated one run in the top of the first against CSUEB starter Ransome Alexander, the East Bay bats went to work. They scored three times in the first inning and twice more in the second to quickly grab a 5-1 lead. Alexander was followed by Joe Blair and Donavon Ramirez, who tossed one scoreless frame each.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Pioneers broke it open with six runs off six hits, highlighted by back-to-back triples by Conners and Jacob Eder

Senior Jacob Call came in to start the fourth and worked 5.0 innings for head coach Mike Cummins. San Marcos scored in just one of those innings, as they answered CSUEB's six-spot with four runs of their own in the top of the sixth. That made the score 11-5, but it was as close as CSUSM would get to a comeback.

Call held the visitors off the scoreboard in the seventh and eighth, as East Bay tacked on three more insurance runs with RBI hits by Matt Cantelme and Joey Dice. Freshman Mark Woinarowicz then pitched a perfect ninth inning to close out the victory.

The Pioneers are playing well as they begin Spring Quarter this week and prepare for one of their toughest series of the season. Next weekend, the team travels to La Jolla or a four-game set against defending West Region champion UC San Diego, starting Friday, Mar. 29.
