East Bay Men's Hoops Conclude Regular Season At Stanislaus State

HAYWARD, Calif., -- The Pioneer men's basketball squad will complete their 2017-18 season with a road matchup against California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) foe Stanislaus State on February 22, in the Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena.
 
Cal State East Bay has improved their overall record to 10-17 on the season and 5-15 in conference action after racking up two consecutive wins.
 
WEEK IN REVIEW
The Pioneer men's basketball team were victorious in their Senior Night, California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) contest, 88-69 against Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday night, February 17 in Pioneer Gymnasium.
 
 Jelani Mitchell poured in a season-high 16 points on 6-for-11 shooting from the field, five rebounds in 23 minutes. Kyle Frakes (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) scored 15 points with four rebounds, two steals and a block on 7-for-14 shooting from the floor. Drew Bender (Phoenix, Ariz.) finished with 13 points on 5-for-10 shooting, five rebounds, four assists and three steals.
 
The Pioneers dominated the Otters in early facet of the ball game as they shot 48.6% (35-for-72) from the field to while holding their opponents to just 36.7% (22-for-60) shooting for the game.
 
CSUEB also outrebounded the Monterey Bay, 49-40 while outscoring them in the painted area, 36-26. East Bay racked up 17 second-chance points with netting 19 points off 16 forced turnovers from the Otters.
 
The Pioneer bench was more productive than the Monterey Bay reserves as East Bay notched 38 bench points. Sophomore Druce Asah (Tracy, Calif.) led all scorers with 18 points off the bench. Asah went 6-for-9 from the floor, including 4-for-6 from three-point range.
 
Wyatt Maker (Salinas, Calif.) added eight points and eight rebounds in only 10 minutes of action. Jordan Balser (Aubrun, Calif.) finished with six points, four assists and two rebounds.
Deiondre Bird (Portland, Ore.) grabbed eight rebounds to go along with his four points in 16 minutes.
 
 
PIONEER POINTS
Cal State East Bay is eighth in the CCAA in free throwing shooting with 382 made foul shots on 70.5% accuracy as a team. The Pioneers have also been dominant in rebounding averaging 37.7 rebounds per outing, good for second in the conference. CSUEB is also second in the CCAA in rebounding defense (32.7) and first in offensive rebounds (12.0).
 
Sophomore Druce Asah (Tracy, Calif.) leads the Pioneers with 12.9 points per contest. Asah has started 23 games and has 18 games with 10 or more points. He is leading the Pioneers in scoring during conference games with 13.5 points on 38.0% shooting from the field. Asah is grabbing 3.6 rebounds with two blocks and 12 steals so far on the season.
 
Asah also leads East Bay with 53 made three-points with a 37.3% shooting clip from long distance.
 
Senior guard Drew Bender (Phoenix, Ariz.) is second on the team with 11.6 points per game. Bender is adding 3.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists on 40.6% shooting from the field with 17 double figure scoring outings including five of the first six games to start of 2018.
 
Senior Kyle Frakes (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) has notched double figure rebounding in five of the last eight East Bay outings. Frakes is averaging 9.4 points and a team leading 8.0 rebounds in CCAA play.
 
Junior guard Juwan Anderson (Oakland, Calif.) is tops on the team and second in the conference with 4.7 assists per contest. His 126 total assists are second best in the CCAA. Anderson is chipping in 8.8 points and 3.0 rebounds. His 29.7 minutes per outing in leading the squad as well as his 27 steals. He has 18 games with at least four assists and he dished out a career best 10 assists vs. UC San Diego.
 
SCOUTING STANISLAUS STATE
The Stanislaus State Warriors are currently 15-11 on the season and 10-10 in CCAA play after back-to-back losses to Cal State L.A. and Cal State Dominguez Hills last week. Andy Cleaves is leading the Warriors with 12.3 points and 4.3 rebounds. Ty Davis is adding 10.3 points and 4.5 assists.
