Pioneers Fall at William Jessup to Wrap up Non-Conference Slate

LINCOLN, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay baseball team fell in non-conference action on the road at William Jessup on Monday afternoon by a final score of 14-6, as the Warriors claimed the season series over the Pioneers, two games to none.

The Pioneers jumped ahead 3-0 in this game, but WJU rallied in the middle innings, touching up the CSUEB  bullpen for crooked numbers in four straight frames. The home team tallied 19 hits in total.

Dallas Dey had a big day at the plate for East Bay. The senior scored two runs, drove one in, and was the only Pioneer batter with multiple hits. He was also at the center of the team's scoring rallies as they grabbed an early advantage.

In the second inning, Nolan Jekich led off with a double, and Dey followed with an opposite field single to plate the game's first run. After a walk to Matt Cantelme and a sacrifice bunt by Aaron Albaum, Joey Dice made it 2-0 with a sac fly.

Two innings later, Dey doubled down the third base line to start things off. After Cantelme was hit by a pitch and Dice walked, a ground out by Paul Bryniarski put the Pioneers ahead by three.

Right-hander RJ Hanson was excellent for East Bay in his second start of the season. The senior struck out nine Warriors and escaped a couple jams to navigate through 4.0 scoreless innings as the Pioneers built their lead.

After Hanson exited the game, the Jessup bats went to work. The first five batters of the bottom of the fifth inning got hits, and by the time the Pioneers recorded three outs, they trailed 4-3. The following inning, a three-run homer by Alex Nasukiewicz made it 7-3 in favor of the home team.

The Warriors broke the game open in the seventh, tallying five more hits and plating five more runs. East Bay got one run back in the eighth and another in the ninth, but the deficit was too great to overcome.

The Pioneers wrap up their non-conference schedule with a record of 3-3 and will host Cal State LA for four games this weekend to open the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) slate.
