East Bay Men's Basketball Welcomes Monterey Bay for Senior Night Showdown

HAYWARD, Calif., -- The Pioneer men's basketball squad will wrap up their 2017-18 regular season with their "Senior Night" celebration with a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) contest against Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday night, February 17 in Pioneer Gymnasium.
 
For "Senior Night" the Pioneers will be honoring it three seniors: Drew Bender, Jelani Mitchell and Kyle Frakes.
 
 WEEK IN REVIEW
The Pioneer men's basketball team fell in a heartbreaking, 92-90 Homecoming opening weekend loss to the visiting Cal State L.A. Golden Eagles on Friday night, February 10 in Pioneer Gymnasium.
 
Despite the loss, several Pioneers turned in strong performances Friday night in front of a ruckus Homecoming crowd. Sophomore Druce Asah (Tracy, Calif.) poured in a game-high 26 points on 10-for-18 shooting from the field, including 2-for-4 from three-point range. Asah grabbed five rebounds and dished two assists in 29 minutes of action off the bench.
 
Junior point guard Juwan Anderson (Oakland, Calif.) nearly missed a triple-double as he scored 11 points, corralled nine rebounds and notched seven assists on a team best 33 minutes on the floor.
 
The reserves for both squads were very effective as the Golden Eagles outscored East Bay, 43-41 in bench production. Wyatt Maker (Salinas, Calif.) was a key contributor for the Pioneer bench as he finished with a season-high 12 points and seven rebounds on 6-for-7 shooting from the field highlighted by a buzzer beating layup to put the Pioneers up by one at the intermission.
 
The East Bay trio of senior all had solid outing on Friday night. Kyle Frakes (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) notched eight points and a game-best 14 rebounds in 18 minutes. Drew Bender (Phoenix, Ariz.) added 15 points on 5-for-8 shooting from the floor, including a perfect 4-for-4 from the foul line. Bender chipped in four assists, five rebounds and a steal in 29 minutes. Jelani Mitchell (Pasadena, Calif.) put in seven points, a rebound, an assist and a steal in 14 minutes.
 
The Cal State East Bay men's basketball team concluded their Homecoming weekend with a huge, 59-45 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) win over Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday night, February 10 in Pioneer Gymnasium.
 
Despite the outstanding team performance, no Pioneer scored in double figures as every East Bay player contributed equally to the winning cause. Senior center Kyle Frakes (Thousand Oak, Calif.) finished with eight points and tied a game-high with 11 rebounds on 4-for-7 shooting from the floor. Freshman Keshawn Bruner (Sacramento, Calif.) also notched eight points, five rebounds and a block on a 4-for-5 shooting clip.
 
The East Bay reserves poured in 25 points to just 17 points from the Dominguez Hills bench. Sophomore Druce Asah (Tracy, Calif.) led the Pioneer bench with a team-best nine points, two rebounds and a steal on 23 minutes on the court. Wyatt Maker (Salinas, Calif.) added six points, five rebounds and two assists on 3-for-4 shooting for the night.
 
Jordan Balser (Auburn, Calif.) chipped in six points, two rebounds and a steal in 13 reserve minutes while Deiondre Bird (Portland, Ore.) added four points and four rebounds in 13 minutes off the bench.
 
Drew Bender (Phoenix, Ariz.) compiled seven points, six rebounds and two assists on 30 minutes on the court. Jelani Mitchell (Pasadena, Calif.) poured in six points and grabbed four rebounds in 29 minutes of action. Junior guard Juwan Anderson (Oakland, Calif.) posted five points, a game-best four assists with two rebounds and two steals for East Bay.
 
PIONEER POINTS
Cal State East Bay is seventh in the CCAA in free throwing shooting with 373 made foul shots on 71.5% accuracy as a team. The Pioneers have also been dominant in rebounding averaging 37.3 rebounds per outing, good for second in the conference. CSUEB is also second in the CCAA in rebounding defense (32.5) and second in offensive rebounds (11.8).
 
Sophomore Druce Asah (Tracy, Calif) leads the Pioneers with 12.7 points per contest. Asah has started 23 games and has 17 games with 10 or more points. He is leading the Pioneers in scoring during conference games with 13.3 points on 38.7% shooting from the field. Asah is grabbing 3.8 rebounds with two blocks and 12 steals so far on the season.
 
Asah also leads East Bay with 49 made three-points with a 36.0% shooting clip from long distance.
 
Senior guard Drew Bender (Phoenix, Ariz.) is second on the team with 11.6 points per game. Bender is adding 3.5 rebounds and 2.2 assists on 40.2% shooting from the field with 16 double figure scoring outings including five of the first six games to start of 2018.
 
Senior Kyle Frakes (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) has notched double figure rebounding in five of the last seven East Bay outings. Frakes is averaging 9.2 points and a team leading 8.3 rebounds in CCAA play.
 
Junior guard Juwan Anderson (Oakland, Calif.) is tops on the team and second in the conference with 4.5 assists per contest. His 118 total assists are second best in the CCAA. Anderson is chipping in 9.0 points and 3.0 rebounds. His 30.0 minutes per outing in leading the squad as well as his 25 steals. He has 17 games with at least four assists and he dished out a career best 10 assists vs. UC San Diego.
 
SCOUTING CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY
The Cal State Monterey Bay Otters are currently sitting 13th in the CCAA standings with a record of 4-20 and a 3-17 mark in conference action after back-to-back to losses Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State L.A. Jahvon Johnson leads the Otters with 13.0 points and 2.6 assists per game. Mateo Jones is adding 10.2 points and 8.2 rebounds per contest.
