CHICO, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay women's basketball team ran into a hot-shooting Chico State squad on Saturday night and suffered a road loss by the final score of 78-59 at Acker Gymnasium.
It snaps a two-game winning streak for the Pioneers and drops them back to an even .500 for the season at 5-5.
The Wildcats (6-1) continued their impressive start to the 2018-19 slate by jumping all over East Bay in the first quarter. The Pioneers seemingly couldn't get any shots to fall in the opening minutes, and they found themselves in a deep 17-4 hole after one period.
East Bay righted the ship offensively after that, scoring 55 points in the last three quarters, but it was't enough to keep up with a Wildcat team that was able to score efficiently all evening.
The Pioneers shot just 30 percent from the field for the game, and they went 4-for-28 from three-point range. Chico State, meanwhile, hit nearly 50 percent of its field goals and was red-hot from long distance. That was particularly the case when the Wildcats grabbed the lead in the first half, as the home team when 6-for-11 from beyond the arc over the first 20 minutes. They were led by Madison Wong, who finished 5-for-9 on three-pointers and scored a game-high 26 points.Â
Senior
Elayshia Woolridge led the Pioneers with 12 points -- 10 of which came in the second half -- to go along with three assists, three steals, and four rebounds.
Faith Turner also reached double figures with 10 points, going 4-for-7 from the floor.Â
The home team was a bit sloppy with the ball, tallying 20 turnovers as the Pioneers racked up 11 steals. But Chico's sharp shooting, combined with a rebounding advantage of 45-34, allowed them to hang on to a comfortable lead virtually the whole game.Â
Madison Schiller contributed eight points and a pair of assists on 3-for-8 shooting for East Bay. Freshman
Delia Moore added six points and notched a team-high four steals.Â
The Pioneers now have a week off to focus on final exams before they return to the court the evening of Monday, Dec. 17 for a road showdown with Bay Area rival San Francisco State.Â
