SAN FRANCISCO -- The Cal State East Bay women's basketball team fell to SF State on the road Monday evening as the Gators went on a run coming out of halftime and held on for a 69-60 victory.
The Pioneers are now 5-6 overall this season after dropping their first California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) contest after last week's Fall semester final exams.Â
East Bay came up short despite a huge game from senior
Savannah McGill, who nearly notched a double-double before halftime. After the Pioneers trailed by seven following a 23-point first quarter for SFSU, McGill scored the first three buckets of the second period to get CSUEB back in it.
They trailed by just three at halftime, but the Gators came out of the intermission and quickly stretched their lead out to double figures. Aside from McGill and
Faith Turner, who scored eight points on a perfect 4-for-4 from the field, the Pioneers struggled to get shots to fall, and they weren't able to string together enough of a scoring run to erase their deficit.
The visitors also battled foul trouble all evening in a game that was heavily officiated. Turner fouled out in just seven minutes, while
Kayley Hsiung saw 17 minutes of court time before picking up her fifth. All told, the Pioneers were whistled for 29 fouls, 12 more than their opponent. As a result, the Gators attempted 21 more free throws than East Bay.
McGill finished with 21 points on 9-for-17 shooting to go along with 15 rebounds, four steals, and three blocks. It's her fourth double-double and her second time surpassing 20 points this season. It also matches her season high for rebounds.
Kincso Kelemen added nine points, going 2-for-5 from three-point range.
Madison Schiller contributed six on 2-for-3 shooting off the bench.
Next up, the Pioneers return home for a non-conference game Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. against Point Loma and will look to get back the win column heading into next week's holiday break.Â
