VALLEJO, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay women's basketball team picked up its second straight victory on Tuesday evening, cruising past Cal Maritime by a final score of 71-33.
The Pioneers raced out to an early lead and never looked back against the Keelhaulers, who compete in the NAIA's California Pacific Conference. CSUEB held the home team to 1-for-14 shooting in the opening quarter as the Pioneers out-scored them 21-3 in the first 10 minutes of play.
With a substantial advantage early in the contest, head coach
Shanele Stires was able to utilize her entire roster. Seven different non-starters played at least 15 minutes, and they helped the Pioneers continue to extend their lead. Even after Maritime started to get some shots to fall, East Bay out-scored them 31-19 in the second half.
The Pioneers shot 55.3 percent from the field for the game, and they were especially impressive from long distance, going 9-for-19. Much of that damage was done by
Kincso Kelemen, who tallied 12 points in 15 minutes of court time. The junior attempted nothing but three-pointers, finishing 4-for-6.
Senior
Savannah McGill also had success from beyond the arc, knocking down both of her attempts. After scoring a career-high 27 points in Alaska on Saturday, she continued her impressive run by leading all players in the game with 14 points and 10 rebounds. McGill added three assists and was a near-perfect 6-for-7 from the floor.
East Bay was particularly dominant in the low post, racking up 32 points in the paint and out-rebounding Cal Maritime 44-27. In addition to McGill's performance, junior
Jojuan Carrington posted 12 points on 6-for-10 shooting. Sophomore forward
Faith Turner contributed nine points, going 3-for-4 from the field.
Junior
Ruobing Bai played a team-high 21 minutes and dished out four assists to lead the Pioneers.
CSUEB is now 3-2 this season in non-conference play. They'll celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday this week before returning to Hayward to host Cal State San Marcos Saturday afternoon in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opener.
