McGill's Career Night Lifts East Bay to 63-57 Victory Over Alaska

ANCHORAGE, ALASKA – The Cal State East Bay women's basketball program captured it's first road victory of the season with a 63-57 win over the University of Alaska-Fairbanks on Saturday afternoon, November 17. With the win the Pioneers closed out the Seawolf Hoops Classic with a 1-1 record to improve to 2-2 overall on the season.

The Pioneers are now 2-0 all-time against Alaska-Fairbanks with their only meeting resulting in an 84-48 decision in favor of Cal State East Bay on Nov. 17, 2012.

Senior forward Savannah McGill (Lacey, Wash.) was named to the All-Tournament team after pouring in a career-best 27 points. McGill shot 9-for-13 (69.2%) from the field for the game including 4-for-6 (66.7%) from three-point range. She notched her first double double of the season after corralling 15 rebounds to go along with four assists, three blocks and three steals through 35 minutes of action.

The contest was a back and forth affair as the lead shifted between the two squads over 20 times with East Bay holding the largest lead of 11 midway through the fourth quarter.

As the Pioneers offense began to heat up in the second half their defense also began to stiffen up as they held the Nanooks to 29.6% (8-for-27) shooting from the field after the intermission. The Pios were also able to score 19 points on 17 turnovers from Alaska-Fairbanks.

Junior forward Morgan Greene (Phoenix, Ariz.) was the only other Pioneer to notch double digit scoring with 10 points and eight rebounds. Foul trouble limited Greene to only 15 minutes of action.

The East Bay reserves also played a major role in the victory as they outscored UAF 21-8 led by five points and four assists from senior point guard Elayshia Woolridge (Oakland, Calif.) on 28 minutes off the bench.

Faith Turner (Auburn, Wash.) added five points and five rebounds in 14 minutes as a reserve. Kincso Kelemen (Sfantu Gheorghe, Romania) also chipped in five points with an assist.

The Pioneers dominated the boards 43-27 but it was the Nanooks who won the points in the paint battle 32-26.

After the conclusion of Saturday's action, McGill and Greene were among the five players named to the Seawolf Classic All-Tournament Team.

The Pioneers will return to California for another non-conference road match against Cal Maritime on Tuesday evening, November 20 at 5:30 p.m.
