WEEK IN REVIEW
The Cal State East Bay men's basketball program picked up a 70-59 win over Notre Dame De Namur to roundup the opening day of Veteran's Day Classic on Friday night, November 9 in Pioneer Gymnasium.

The Pioneers controlled nearly early facet of the ball game in the victory as they overcame an early 12-point deficit to capture the home victory.

The Pioneer defense held the visiting Argonauts to 40.0% (22-for-55) shooting from the field including 5-for-22 (22.7%) from beyond the arc. East Bay did not shoot very well themselves as they went 20-for-50 (40.0%) from the field along with shooting 5-for-24 (20.8%) from three-point range. The Pios did however perform better at the charity stripe than their opponents going 25-for-30 (83.3%) while the Argos shot 76.9% (10-for-13) from the foul line for the game. CSUEB also forced NDNU into 14 turnovers while scoring 19 points off those turnovers.

Newcomer Ant Navarrete (San Lorenzo, Calif.) notched his first double-double of the season as he scored a game high 18 points on 8-for-12 accuracy from the floor while grabbing 10 rebounds. Navarrete also added one steal in 28 minutes of action.

In total the Pioneers had three players score in double figures. Junior Trent Warren (Melbourne, Australia) tallied 14 points in only 15 minutes of action off the bench. Warren shot 4-for-6 from the field including 3-for-5 from three-point land capped off by a perfect 3-for-3 mark from the free throw line. Senior forward Patrick Marr (Clayton, Calif.) finished with 13 points and five rebounds, while going 7-for-8 from the foul line. Marr added a block, an assist and a steal through 26 minutes.

Cal State East Bay out-rebounded Notre Dame De Namur 38-32 and narrowly edged the Argonauts in the battle of the paint points 28-26. But the major difference was the Pioneers was their production from their reserve players. East Bay go 25 points from the bench to just 12 from Notre Dame.

Senior guard Juwan Anderson (Oakland, Calif.) paced the Pioneers with a game-high seven assists to go along with seven points, three rebounds and two assists. Sophomore Wyatt Maker (Salinas, Calif.) also chipped in seven points and five rebounds in only nine minutes of game action.

This is the third time in the last four seasons in which Cal State East Bay has opened the season with a victory.

CSUEB's starting backcourt of Juwan Anderson and Nai Carlisle was outstanding in the win, combining for 38 points and all five of the team's made three-pointers. Overall, the Pioneers shot 48.1 percent from the field, while their defense held the Hawks to just 36.7 percent.

That defense was particularly impressive in the early going, as the home team held Holy Names to just 6-for-25 from the field in the first half and took a 10-point lead into the halftime break.

The Hawks did eventually heat up after intermission behind guard Andre Green, who finished with 22 points. East Bay's lead hovered in the single digits for most of the second half, and the visitors even briefly grabbed a lead, 52-51, before a Carlisle three-pointer put the Pioneers back ahead.

They never looked back after that, pulling away for the double-digit victory over the final eight minutes. Anderson took over down the stretch, scoring 16 of his 22 points in the second half and burying three shots from long distance. The senior also tallied 5 rebounds, four assists, and three steals on the night.

Carlisle notched 16 points on an efficient 7-for-9 shooting performance. Fellow newcomer Ant Navarrete also reached double figures with 10 points, and the junior added five boards.

Senior Evan Wardlow contributed eight points and six boards, while Patrick Marr grabbed a
team-high seven rebounds. Junior Trent Warren was impactful in 12 minutes off the bench, tallying eight points and four rebounds.
