HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay volleyball team picked up its fifth straight win on Friday, turning in a dominant effort to sweep past visiting Sonoma State in straight sets.
The red-hot Pioneers remain tied atop the CCAA North Division with the victory, improving their overall record to 10-8 with a 6-4 mark in conference play.
This was East Bay's most lopsided victory of the season, as they out-hit the Seawolves .462 to .042, made just five attack errors the entire evening, and never allowed Sonoma to even reach 20 points in a set. That .462 hitting percentage is the team's highest of the year, besting the .402 mark they posted in a three-set victory over Alaska Anchorage back on Sept. 1.
The Pioneers used a 7-1 run to pull away midway through the opening frame after the teams had been close in the early going. They actually trailed 11-6 in game two before
Lindsey Ray served them to an 8-0 run to take over the lead, which they didn't relinquish. The Seawolves weren't able to build any momentum coming out of intermission, as the Pioneers opened the third set with a 10-3 run and never looked back.
Nearly every player on the court for East Bay posted impressive numbers, as the Pioneers topped Sonoma in total kills, 41-31, and total blocks, 11-1. Ray led the way with 11 kills on 20 attempts, notching a .450 hitting percentage to go with seven digs.
Seniors
Kiki Leuteneker and
Kathy McKiernan both had extremely efficient offensive nights, each tallying seven kills without an attack error.
Deja Thompson added six kills on just 10 attempts and racked up a season-high seven blocks.
Freshman
Tayler Templeman was impressive in her first career start, playing all three sets on the right side and finishing with six kills.
Setter
Katie Ireland was the only player on the court to notch a double-double, totaling 29 assists and 11 digs to go along with three kills and three blocks.
The Pioneers will look to keep their streak going when they host their third match of the week on Saturday against Humboldt State. First serve is set for 5 p.m.
