East Bay Erases Humboldt State for 6th Straight Win

HAYWARD, Calif. -- For the second night in a row, the Cal State East Bay volleyball team earned a dominant victory in California Collegiate Athletic Association action, as the Pioneers defeated visiting Humboldt State in straight sets on Saturday.

It's the sixth straight victory for CSUEB, giving the team a season-long winning streak and keeping them tied atop the North Division standings with Cal State Monterey Bay at 7-4. The Jacks, meanwhile, drop to 3-14 and are still in search of their first conference win.

The tone was established early, as the opening set was perhaps even more one-sided than the 25-9 score would suggest. The home team opened the match on a 10-0 run and never looked back, making zero attack errors in the frame and holding HSU to a negative hitting percentage. It was more of the same in game two, as East Bay used a 10-1 run to pull away midway through the set.

In the third frame, head coach Kim Lambert essentially emptied the bench, giving nearly everyone on the roster significant playing time. The Jacks grabbed an early lead, which extended to 11-5 before the Pioneers managed to rally back. Led by freshmen attackers Tayler Templeman and Steena Hubbard and backup setter Audrey Lamoureux, who tallied 12 assists in the set, East Bay found its rhythm and stormed back to take the lead and close out the sweep with a truly full team effort.

For the evening, CSUEB hit .324 and held Humboldt to a .008 attack percentage (24 kills and 23 errors). They dominated the Jacks on the block, 9-1, and nearly doubled their kill total, 42-24.

Senior Lindsey Ray was the only Pioneer to notch double-digit kills, posting another impressive effort. She finished with 12 kills, 11 digs, and a .375 hitting percentage.

Starting setter Katie Ireland matched Lamoureux's assist total with 12 through the first two frames, adding nine digs, and seven kills on seven attack attempts. Libero Natahlee Wilson racked up her highest assist total of the year with eight, and the junior led all players in the match with 19 digs for the night.

Senior middle blockers Deja Thompson (four kills, three blocks, .444 pct) and Kathy McKiernan (five kills, two blocks, .455 pct) both turned in exceptionally efficient performances. Templeman finished second on the team with eight kills, while Hubbard added four.

Next up, East Bay's current stretch of four straight home matches concludes on Wednesday when the team welcomes in SF State for a midweek contest and another important CCAA North Division showdown.
