SEASIDE, Calif.
-- The Cal State East Bay men's golf team had a strong showing in its final tournament of the Fall, earning a sixth place finish in an impressive 17-team field this week at the Otter Invitational.

The Pioneers shot team scores of 291, 295, and 298 in the 54-hole event for a total of 884 (+20). No. 2 ranked Lynn took the team title at three under par, and all five teams ahead of CSUEB are ranked in the top 15 nationally. The Pioneers beat six CCAA foes at the par-72 Bayonet Golf Club, including the host Cal State Monterey Bay.

There weren't many low numbers for East Bay, but a great deal of solid play in the low-to-mid 70s. Senior Will Barnett was the top individual for the second week in a row, earning a share of 11th place individually. His 70 in the second round was the best card by anyone on the team this week, and it was sandwiched around a 73 and a 76 for a total of 219 (+3).

Fellow senior Greg Smith was the most consistent Pioneer of the week with cards of 73-74-74. His total score of 221 (+5) was good for a share of 22nd place in the overall field of 89 golfers.

Senior Declan Illingsworth led the squad with a 71 in the opening round, then followed it uo with a 77 and a 75 to finish tied for 28th at 223 (+7). One stroke behind him was junior Max Murai, who carded 74 and 77 Monday before turning in a team-best score of 73 on Tuesday. Murai tied for 34th place with a total of 224 (+8).

Joey Herrera wrapped up the week with rounds of 76, 74, and 79 to finish with a share of 53rd place and a total of 229 (+13).

Newcomer Jake Malone made his Pioneers debut competing as an individual and shot 79-82-78 to finish tied for 82nd place at 239 (+23).

This is the last competition for the Pioneers for a few months, as they take a break until the Bay Area Invitational at TPC Harding Park on Feb. 25. With four solid performances, this veteran squad has shown it has the ability to be a contender in the CCAA come springtime.
