SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay women's cross country had a memorable morning at the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational to cap off what has been an outstanding set of regular season meets for the Pioneers. The squad raced to victory Saturday in the 6k Open, taking first place out of 23 teams.Â
Led by a trio of top-10 individual finishers, CSUEB bested second-place Humboldt State by 25 points. The Pioneers topped a field that included five Division I schools and six of East Bay's CCAA rivals.Â
"Incredible team running today by our women," praised head coach
Tony Nicolosi. "Obviously Ceci and Angie keep having tremendous runs, but everyone behind them stepped up as well and closed the gap. We are starting to run our best at the right time, and it was really cool to see these women win a meet."
Senior
Cecilia Carretero was the runner-up finisher in the 240-person race to lead the way for CSUEB, posting a time of 21:33.6. Sophomore
Angelina Ronquillo ran yet another stellar race to take fourth place in 21:52.6.Â
Claire Fisher was close behind and turned in her most impressive effort as a Pioneer to notch a ninth place finish. The sophomore posted a personal best time of 22:00.9, which moves her up from No. 7 to No. 4 on the program's all-time list of fastest 6k times.Â
Junior
Andrea Romero notched a personal best as well, taking 25th place overall in 22:39.5. She also vaulted up the all-time list and now holds the Pioneers' eighth-fastest time since 6k became the standard women's distance.Â
Senior
Katherine Embody was the fifth scorer for East Bay, placing 51st with a time of 23:14.3. She was followed closely by sophomore
Caitlin Amburgey, who finished 58th in 23:17.5.Â
Brittney Duquette (23:38.6) took 83rd,
Alondra Castro Ortiz (23:43.5) placed 89th,
Amanda Navarro (24:01.6) finished 106th,
Jodi Go (25:05.2) took 160th, and
Samantha Valencia (25:39.0) finished 177th to rounds out a fantastic overall team effort by the Pioneers.Â
The squad now has three weeks to prepare for CCAA Championships Nov. 3 in San Bernardino, where they will look to continue their momentum from this race -- and an outstanding Fall overall -- to improve on last year's ninth place conference finish.Â
