HAYWARD, Calif. -- Junior
Elayshia Woolridge hit nothing but net on a three-pointer from the corner as the final buzzer sounded on Saturday, lifting the Cal State East Bay women's basketball team to a dramatic 73-71 victory over Stanislaus State.
The win keeps the Pioneers (10-6, 6-4 CCAA) unbeaten at home this season, improving their record to 5-0 at Pioneer Gym. They trailed by as many as 14 early in the second quarter, and even after erasing that deficit, they were down a point with just two seconds left after Lizzy Anderson scored on Stanislaus's final possession.
Anderson led all scorers with 27 points in the game, 18 of which came in the first half as the Warriors built an early lead. The Pioneers struggled at the outset, missing their first five field goal attempts and committing four turnovers in the first three minutes. Stanislaus led 21-11 after the first quarter, then extended that advantage to 14 midway through the second.
East Bay finally started getting shots to fall in the final few minutes before halftime.
Janae Chamois knocked down a pair of long balls as the Pioneers closed the period on a 15-6 run.
The home team maintained that momentum coming out of the break, as Chamois and
Kayley Hsiung hit three-pointers on the team's first two possessions to give them their first lead of the evening. The game was extremely tight the rest of the way with the squads trading the lead back and forth several times.
Chamois swished a pair of free throws to put the Pioneers ahead by four with just 1:40 left to play, but the Warriors answered with another triple on their next possession. After East Bay failed to score the next time down the floor, Stanislaus got the ball back with a chance to take the lead, which they did on Alexander's driving layup with 18 seconds remaining.
The Pioneers called timeout to set up their final possession, but it was unsuccessful after Chamois's shot in the paint was blocked. East Bay had to give two fouls to get Stanislaus in the bonus, which ticked the clock down to just three seconds.
Fortunately, Angelica Baylon missed both free throws for the Warriors, then
Morgan Greene grabbed her 14th rebound of the night and called a quick timeout with two seconds left.
Greene inbounded the ball from mid-court following the timeout. The Warriors stuck close to Chamois and guarded against someone rolling towards the basket, but no one put a body on Woolridge, who took the inbounds pass unguarded moving towards the corner. She had just enough time to take one dribble and set herself behind the three-point arc before firing off a gorgeous jumper that swished through just as the buzzer sounded, sending Pioneer Gym into a frenzy.
CSUEB finished the night shooting 44.3 percent from the field and 37 percent from long distance. They controlled the glass, out-rebounding Stanislaus 41-31, and managed to win despite an 11-22 shooting performance from beyond the arc by the Warriors (50 percent).
Woolridge tallied 16 points to go along with seven assists and a pair of steals. She finished 3-for-5 from long range, her highest three-point field goal total of the season.

Kayla Blair had her best game in a Pioneer uniform, scoring a season-high 18 points to ignite East Bay's offense as they rallied back in the second and third quarters. She went 8-for-10 from the floor and also grabbed four boards.
Greene picked up her conference-leading 12th double-double of the season, totaling 10 points, three assists, and two blocks to go with her 14 boards. Chamois also reached double figures in scoring with 11.
The Pioneers have won six of their last seven games dating back to mid-December, and they'll put their perfect home record on the line once again this Thursday, Jan. 11, when they welcome in Cal State San Marcos to continue their CCAA schedule.
