HAYWARD, Calif. -- It took an extra period, but the Cal State East Bay women's basketball team remained undefeated at home on Thursday evening, rallying for a 67-63 overtime victory over visiting Cal State San Marcos.
Junior
Elayshia Woolridge buried a clutch three-pointer for the second straight game to force overtime, and sophomore
Morgan Greene had a monster night with 19 points and a career-high 24 rebounds.
The Pioneers were victorious despite shooting just 31.4 percent from the field and going 2-for-12 from three-point range. However, they were solid at the free throw line (21-for-29), forced 14 turnovers, and held the Cougars to a modest 38.7 percent from the floor.
East Bay was red hot to start the evening, hitting five of their first six field goal attempts and jumping out to an 11-0 lead. But they went cold after that, going 4-for-24 the rest of the first and second quarters as San Marcos slowly clawed back and took the lead. After a low-scoring first half, the teams went into the break with CSUSM leading 26-19.
CSUEB's offensive woes continued in the third quarter as they totaled just 12 points and the Cougars continued to extend their lead. With just over three minutes to go in the period, San Marcos held a 15-point advantage, their largest of the game.
But it all flipped for the Pioneers in the fourth quarter. They opened the period on a 15-4 run to tie the game up at 46-46. It was extremely tight the rest of the way, as East Bay finally found its shooting stroke and tallied 26 points in the quarter.
However, in the final minute it appeared as though the Cougars would still escape with a win. Juliet Lewis knocked down a long three with 53 second left to give San Marcos the lead, then Baylee Olson went 1-for-2 at the free throw line to put the visitors ahead by four with just 31 seconds left.
On CSUEB's next possession, Greene scored in the paint, drew a foul, and made the free throw to cut the deficit to one with 12 seconds left. The Pioneers fouled and the Cougars hit both foul shots to go back up by three. That left East Bay with one possession. Woolridge drove in towards the basketball, and kicked it out to
Janae Chamois as the clock ticked inside five seconds. Guarded well and unable to get a clean look at a three-pointer, she passed it back to Woolridge on the wing, who knocked down a game-tying triple with 0.9 seconds left.
The final buzzer sounded with the teams tied 57-57, forcing five extra minutes of play. The teams traded buckets for the first few minutes of overtime, and with 1:53 left it was tied once again at 63-63. The Pioneers got a defensive stop on the next possession, and then Chamois got to the rim and scored along the baseline to put the home team ahead.
The Pioneers then forced a turnover to get the ball back, and
Bri Guillory came up with a huge offensive rebound on the other end after Woolridge's layup rimmed out. The Cougars fouled Guillory with just 11 seconds left, and she made two huge free throws to go up by four. CSUSM missed its final two shot attempts, sealing the four-point win for the Pioneers.
Greene finished 7-for-12 from the field, adding two blocks and two steals. The reigning CCAA Player of the Week notched her 13th double-double of the season and recorded her first career game with at least 20 rebounds.
Woolridge tallied 17 points and seven rebounds, scoring in double figures for the 10th time in her last 12 games. During that span, she's averaging just over 15 points per contest.
Guillory contributed 10 points in 32 minutes off the bench, highlighted by a perfect 8-for-8 performance at the foul line. Chamois and junior
Kayla Blair added nine points each.
The Pioneers have now won seven of their last eight games and will put their perfect home record on the line once again Saturday afternoon. East Bay hosts first-place UC San Diego for a 1:30 p.m. matinee in a rematch of last year's CCAA championship game.
