Pioneers Go Cold In 91-70 Loss To Coyotes

HAYWARD, Calif., -- The Cal State East Bay men's basketball team dropped a tough home contest, 91-70 to the visiting Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes Saturday night, January 27 in Pioneer Gymnasium.
 
It was the Pioneers sixth straight California Collegiate Athletic Association loss as they fall to 8-14 on the season and 4-12 in conference play. The Coyotes also swept the season series over CSUEB after picking up a close, 89-87 victory on December 29 in Coussoulis Arena.
 
East Bay struggled to knock down shots Saturday night as they went 37.9% (22-for-58) from the field while shooting just 26.7% (4-for-15) from beyond the arc.
 
San Bernardino was the first game in 14 games to shoot over 50% on the Pioneer defense. The Coyotes finished the game shooting 58.3% (35-for-60) from the floor with four players notching double figures.
 
However, the Pioneers did have three player compile double digits on the night led by 12 points from sophomore guard Druce Asah (Tracy, Calif.) on 4-for-8 shooting accuracy. Asah added two rebounds while going 4-for-6 from the foul line in 22 minutes.
 
Senior center Kyle Frakes (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) scored 11 points, collected eight rebounds and dished one assist while going 4-for-7 for the game.
 
Senior forward Jelani Mitchell (Pasadena, Calif.) led the East Bay reserves with 10 points, two rebounds and an assist in 20 minutes of action. Mitchell went 3-for-6 from the field and 4-for-5 from the charity stripe.
 
The Coyotes controlled the game from the opening tip as they dominated in almost every category of the game. The Pioneers biggest lead of three points came with 17:29 left to play in the opening half. San Bernardino outrebounded East Bay, 34-32 and out scored the Pioneers in the paint, 44-26. The Coyotes bench chipped in 39 points to just 27 points from the Pioneers bench. CSUSB also transition defense allowed no fast break buckets from East Bay.
 
The Pioneers would pull within 10 early in the second half of action before a 10-0 run by the Coyotes all but put the game out of reach. San Bernardino would claim their largest lead of 26 midway through the second half.
 
Freshman guard Brycen Wight (Oxnard, Calif.) put in seven points in just eight minutes while not missing a shot from the floor. Junior forward Deiondre Bird (Portland, Ore.) put in eight points, four rebounds and a team best three assists for CSUEB. Junior point guard Juwan Anderson (Oakland, Calif.) scored eight points, two rebounds and an assists on a team high 26 minutes.
 
The Pioneers will head on the road for meetings against Humboldt State on February 1 and Chico State on February 3. Games are set to tipoff at 7:30 p.m.
