East Bay Women Come up Short against San Bernardino

HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay women's basketball team was defeated at home for just the second time this season on Saturday, falling 67-57 to Cal State San Bernardino to split their weekend homestand at Pioneer Gym.

The Pioneers struggled offensively throughout the evening, shooting just 32.7 percent from the field as they drop to 13-9 for the season with a 9-7 record in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play.

On the heels of one of their biggest victories of the season over Cal Poly Pomona on Friday, the Pioneers couldn't find their rhythm for much of the game against the Coyotes after grabbing an early lead.

Things looked good in the first part of the opening quarter as East Bay took a 20-10 advantage. The Coyotes chipped away to make it 20-14 by the end of the period, and then they out-scored the Pioneers 16-5 in the second to flip the momentum and take over the lead.

Morgan Greene got two quick fouls early in the quarter and sat out most of the rest of the period. CSUEB's offense felt the effects of her absence, making just two field goals in the second and heading into halftime down 30-25.

Scoring remained scarce in the third quarter as the teams played to an 11-11 tie, keeping the Pioneers in striking distance despite their struggles. They started to get more shots to fall in the fourth, but unfortunately so did the Coyotes. San Bernardino went on a 9-1 run early in the final period to extend their lead to 10.

The Pioneers cut their deficit to five on multiple occasions in the final period, but they weren't able to string together enough defensive stops to pull off the comeback. Every time East Bay got close, the Coyotes seemed to get a big bucket from Kaitlyn Parks, who had a huge night with 22 points and 12 rebounds.

In a bit of a statistical quirk, the Pioneers had a five-way tie for their leading scorer in this contest as Greene, Elayshia Woolridge, Janae Chamois, Kayla Blair, and Bri Guillory all posted exactly 10 points.

Greene added 17 rebounds to secure her 16th double-double of the season. That figure, as well as her rebounding average of 13.0 per game, rank second in the entire nation. Chamois dished out a team-high five assists, while Woolridge notched four.

The Pioneers had a solid night shooting from long distance, finishing 7-for-15 from three-point range as a team. But it wasn't enough to overcome 22 turnovers that led to 20 points for Cal State San Bernardino.

East Bay is right in the thick of the CCAA postseason race with three weeks remaining in the season, and Pioneers will have to put this loss behind them quickly with a crucial road trip upcoming. This week, the squad visits Humboldt State on Thursday and Chico State on Saturday to take on two teams also vying for playoff positioning.
