Humboldt Hands East Bay Heartbreaking Loss with Overtime Buzzer Beater

ARCATA, Calif. -- The Cal State East bay women's basketball team lost on the road in heartbreaking fashion on Thursday evening when Jovanah Arrington's long three-pointer beat the overtime buzzer to give Humboldt State a 76-73 win over the Pioneers.

CSUEB, which entered the important late-season California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) contest one-and-a-half games behind the Jacks for second place in the standings, fell to 13-10 with a 9-8 conference record. HSU improved to 12-9 and added more distance between itself and the Pioneers with an 11-5 record in CCAA games.

It was a well-played game overall by the Pioneers, who shot 49 percent from the field and won the rebounding battle. But they struggled from three-point range (2-for-13) and were hurt by 19 turnovers that led to 19 HSU points.

Morgan Greene had a typically outstanding performance, posting 22 points and 13 rebounds and going 8-for-12 from the floor to notch her 17th double-double of the season.

After the two teams played to an 18-18 tie in the opening quarter, the Pioneers got hot and racked up 24 points in the second to take a 42-30 lead into halftime. They led by as many as 13 midway through the third, but the Jacks closed that period on an 8-2 run.

East Bay led most of the fourth quarter as well, but the home team slowly erased their deficit and finally took their first lead of the second half with 3:27 remaining. Elayshia Woolridge made some big shots when the Pioneers needed them, scoring 10 of her 17 points in the second half.

After a crucial play in which CSUEB allowed an offensive rebound after a missed HSU free throw, which led to a three-point play by the Jacks, the Pioneers trailed by two with under a minute.

On a well-designed out-of-bounds play, Woolridge knocked down a short jumper to tie the score at 69-69 with 40 seconds left. After a defensive stop, East Bay got the ball back with a chance to win, but Woolridge wasn't able to get a shot off, forcing overtime.

The Jacks again took a two-point lead late in the extra period before a layup by Greene tied the score at 73-73 with 24 seconds left. The Jacks called timeout to set up their final play, which the Pioneers seemed to have well-defended as the final seconds ticked down. But Arrington was able to hit a long triple as the buzzer sounded to give the Jacks the win.

Savannah McGill tallied eight points and four rebounds, while Kayley Hsiung added seven points.

The Pioneers will have to put this tough loss behind them with another crucial road matchup awaiting them against Chico State on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
