Greene Scores Career-High 33 to Pace Overtime Win over Pomona

HAYWARD, Calif. -- Morgan Greene continued her phenomenal sophomore campaign on Friday, scoring a career-high 33 points to lead the Cal State East Bay women's basketball team to a 76-67 overtime victory over Cal Poly Pomona at Pioneer Gym.

The final score isn't quite indicative of how tight the game was, as the Pioneers (13-8, 9-6 CCAA) pulled away in the final minutes of the overtime period. It was a one possession game virtually the entire second half in one of the more exciting contests played in the Hayward hills this season.

The victory improves East Bay's home record to 7-1 this season. It also brings CSUEB a bit closer to Pomona (13-6, 10-4 CCAA) in the California Collegiate Athletic Association standings. The two-time defending champion Pioneers are now just 1.5 games behind the second-place Broncos and a half-game behind third-place Humboldt State heading into Saturday's game against Cal State San Bernardino.

For Greene, it was the first time in her career surpassing the 30-point plateau. It's also the highest single-game scoring total by any CCAA player in 2017-18. Greene leads the conference in field goal percentage and had a remarkably efficient game, going 12-for-14 from the floor and 9-for-11 from the foul line. The sophomore also pulled in 16 rebounds, which marks her sixth time this season recording at least 16 boards.

As a team, the Pioneers out-shot Pomona 46 percent to 38 percent from the field. They also dominated the glass, out-rebounding the Broncos 42-24. But it was nonetheless an extremely close game. The teams were tied 15-15 after the first quarter, and then East Bay went on a 14-3 run midway through the second period to grab a 10-point lead, their largest of the night.

The Broncos quickly erased that deficit, scoring 10 straight points to tie the game before a pair of free throws by Greene sent CSUEB into halftime leading 36-34. Neither team led by more than four points for the remainder of regulation. The Pioneers scored just eight points in the fourth quarter, but their defense was up to the task.

Pomona went up by two with just under three minutes left, as Chelsea Waddy-Blow scored two of her team-high 21 points at the free throw line. After a pair of defensive stops, Elayshia Woolridge knocked down a jumper from the elbow to tie the score at 63-63 with 1:50 remaining. Both teams had a couple chances to score the potential game-winner, but couldn't get any shots to fall, forcing an extra period.

The Pioneers quickly grabbed a four-point lead in overtime before a layup by Waddy-Blow brought the Broncos back within two with 2:42 on the clock. But as she has been all year, Woolridge was CSUEB's closer. The junior got to the rim and finished tough shots on back-to-back possessions, and all of a sudden East Bay was ahead by six with just 1:29 left. They extended their advantage in the final seconds at the free throw line, securing a huge victory.

Woolridge finished with 14 points on 6-for-11 shooting, reaching double figures for the 14th time in her last 16 games. The Oakland native has climbed all the way up to No. 9 in the CCAA in scoring, averaging 13.7 points per game.

The Pioneers didn't have a stellar performance from long distance, finishing 5-for-18 on three-pointers as a team. Most of that damage was done by senior Janae Chamois, who went 4-for-8 from beyond the arc and tallied 13 points.

Fellow senior Bri Guillory gave East Bay valuable offense off the bench, adding eight points on 3-for-4 shooting in 17 minutes.

The Pioneers will have to turn the page quickly following a satisfying win. They're back in action Saturday evening, welcoming in Cal State San Bernardino to Pioneer Gym for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
