HAYWARD, Calif., -- The Pioneers men's basketball hoop squad are back in Pioneer Gymnasium with contests against #25 Cal Poly Pomona on January 26 and Cal State San Bernardino on January 27. The matchups are set to tipoff at 7:30 p.m. both nights.

Cal State East Bay are 2-4 in their six games since the start of 2018 and are on a current four-game losing skid. The Pioneers are sitting 11th in the CCAA with an 8-12 overall mark in a 4-10 record in conference action.

The Cal State East Bay men's basketball team suffered a tough, 81-73 road defeat to San Francisco State on Friday night, January 19 in The Swamp.

It was the third consecutive loss for the Pioneers as they fall to 8-11 on the season and 4-9 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. CSUEB was also swept in their season series with SF State after having already loss to the Gators, 83-79 in Hayward during the Thanksgiving break.

East Bay got off to a hot start as sophomore guard
Druce Asah (Tracy, Calif.) scored six of the first 10 Pioneer points highlighted by two three-point field goals. CSUEB would find themselves up by 12 points midway through the opening half after junior point guard
Juwan Anderson (Oakland, Calif.) knocked down two three-pointers of his own.

Druce Asah would finish the game with a team-high 18 points and a steal, while hitting three shots from beyond the arc. Asah went 5-for-6 from the foul line in 31 minutes of action.

Juwan Anderson contributed in all facets of the game scoring a season-best 17 points on 6-for-11 shooting from the floor, with a impressive 2-for-3 night from three-point range. Anderson dished out a team-best four assists, collected six rebounds and added a steal. He went a perfect 3-for-3 from the charity stripe in 32 minutes of action.

The Pioneers would start the second half similar to the first with four quick points from senior center
Kyle Frakes (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) as they claimed their largest lead of 14 with 17:00 minutes left to go in the game.

Frakes just narrowly missed his second straight game with a double double after notching 10 points and nine rebounds in 27 minutes.

Despite being the outscored 30-19 in bench production, a couple East Bay reserves turned in solid performances.
Jordan Balser (Auburn, Calif.) tallied none points, four rebounds and three assists in 25 minutes on the court.
Jelani Mitchell (Pasadena, Calif.) chipped in eight points, two rebounds and a steal in 14 minutes.

The Pioneer men's basketball team could not complete the season sweep as Sonoma State picked up the, 72-68 victory Saturday night, January 20 in the Wolves' Den. CSUEB defeated the Seawolves, 77-66 in Pioneer Gymnasium to begin the 2018 year.

East Bay moves to 8-12 on the season with a 4-10 mark in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action as they suffered their fourth consecutive loss.

CSUEB outplayed the Seawolves in several areas of the game. The Pioneers held the rebounding advantage, 31-28 while scoring 11 points off 11 Sonoma State turnovers. East Bay outscored Sonoma State, 28-22 in points within the painted area.

Despite the unfavorable outcome, the Pioneers had strong performances from several players. Senior center
Kyle Frakes (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) had his second double double in three games with 15 points and 10 rebounds on 7-for-13 shooting from the floor. Frakes has now scored in double figures in three consecutive outings.

Senior guard
Drew Bender (Phoenix, Ariz.) compiled a game high 19 points on 7-for-13 shooting from the field. Bender added five rebounds and two assists on 32 minutes on the court. Junior guard
Juwan Anderson (Oakland, Calif.) tallied 17 points while connecting on 4-for-7 shot from three-point land. Anderson finished 6-for-11 from the field with a rebound, a steal and an assists in 28 minutes.

East Bay struggled to find their shot during the contest as they only knocked down 36.8% (7-for-19) of their shot from three-point range. The Pioneers completed the game shooting 44.8% (26-for-58) from the field after a 50% (14-for-28) second half shooting mark.

However, CSUEB got off to a hot start to begin the second half as they claimed their biggest lead of four points midway through the second half. But a 9-0 run by the Seawolves put them ahead for good as they would never trail again in the contest.

Both squads finished dead even in bench production with 13 points. Sophomore
Jordan Balser (Auburn, Calif.) led the Pioneer reserves with seven points and two assists on 3-for-4 shooting in 22 minutes of play.

Deiondre Bird (Portland, Ore.) dished out a career best four assists for East Bay while grabbing five rebounds and scoring two points in 21 minutes.

Cal State East Bay is fifth in the CCAA in free throwing shooting with 296 made foul shots on 72.5% accuracy as a team. The Pioneers have also been dominant in rebounding averaging 36.9 rebounds per outing, good for third in the conference. CSUEB is also second in the CCAA in rebounding defense (31.2) and offensive rebounds (11.8).

Sophomore
Druce Asah (Tracy, Calif.) leads the Pioneers with 12.1 points per contest. Asah has started in 19 games and has 13 games with 10 or more points. He is leading the Pioneers in scoring during conference games with 12.6 points in 37.4% shooting from the field. Asah is grabbing 3.9 rebounds with two blocks and nine steals so far on the season.

Asah also leads East Bay with 41 made three-points with a 38.0% shooting clip from long distance.

Senior guard
Drew Bender (Phoenix, Ariz.) is notching 12.1 points per game. Bender is adding 3.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists on 40.6% shooting from the field with 13 double figure scoring outings including five of the first six games to start of 2018.

Kyle Frakes (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) has notched double-doubles in two of the last three East Bay outings. Frakes is averaging 7.4 points and a team leading 6.0 rebounds.

Junior guard
Juwan Anderson (Oakland, Calif.) is tops on the team and second in the conference with 4.6 assists per contest. His 92 total assists are second best in the CCAA. Anderson is chipping in 9.7 points and 2.7 rebounds. His 29.9 minutes per outing in leading the squad as well as his 20 steals. He has 13 games with at least four assists and he dished out a career best 10 assists vs. UC San Diego.

The Cal Poly Pomona Broncos are currently ranked 25 in the nation and tops in the CCAA with a 14-3 overall mark and with a 11-2 mark in conference action after wins over Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State L.A. Jordan Ogundiran is leading the Broncos with 15.1 points and 4.5 assists. William Christmas is adding 13.9 points and 7.1 rebounds.

SCOUTING CAL STATE SAN BERNARDINO
The Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes are eighth in the CCAA with an 8-10 overall record and a 6-8 in conference play after falling to Cal State L.A. and winning Cal State Dominguez Hills. Jacardo Hawkins leads the Coyotes with 12.2 points and 7.2 rebounds. Ajon Efferson is chipping in 11.3 points and 2.9 assists.
