East Bay Women Eke out 58-51 Win over Sonoma to Open 2018

HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay women's basketball team rode a strong fourth quarter performance to a 58-51 victory over visiting Sonoma State on Tuesday at Pioneer Gym in the first game of 2018.

Led by Morgan Greene, who notched her 11th double-double of the season, and Elayshia Woolridge, who scored 10 of her 12 points in the second half, the Pioneers (9-6, 5-4 CCAA) erased a four-point deficit in the final period to get back in the win column. The team has now won five of its last six games.

Things did not start well for East Bay, as they struggled to get shots to fall early in the game. The Pioneers made just three field goals -- all three-pointers -- in the opening quarter and trailed by five after the first 10 minutes.

But the momentum shifted in the second period towards the home team. Kincso Kelemen knocked down a pair of long balls to start the period, and then Greene began to have success down low. The sophomore scored seven points in the second quarter as East Bay hung 20 on the scoreboard and went into halftime tied 29-29.

The Pioneers had more offensive woes in the third, once again making just three buckets for the quarter and failing to score in the final four minutes. But their defense, which had been very good in the first half, was even more impressive in the second half and allowed them to keep the score tight.

Trailing by six points early in the fourth, the Pioneers managed to find their groove again. They rattled off a 12-0 scoring run to flip the script on the Seawolves and grab a 50-44 advantage with just over four minutes left. East Bay's defense held Sonoma to just nine points in the final quarter, and then Woolridge, Janae Chamois, and Kayla Blair combined to go 8-for-8 at the free throw line in the final two minutes to seal the victory.

Greene finished with 13 points and 14 boards, adding to her CCAA-leading rebounding total. She went 6-for-8 from the field after missing her first two attempts of the game.

Woolridge reached double figures in scoring for the ninth time in her last 10 games, adding four rebounds and three assists. Chamois also got to double digits, notching 10 points to go along with a team-high three steals.

Kelemen went 3-for-5 from long distance to post nine points in 17 minutes off the bench. Blair added six points, and senior Bri Guillory scored five to go along with a team-high five assists.

The Pioneers were out-rebounded by SSU and committed more turnovers than the visitors, but they held the Seawolves to just 31.7 percent shooting from the field and 2-for-9 from three-point range.

With the victory, East Bay improves to 4-0 at home this season after the first of five January games at Pioneer Gym. They will put that perfect record on the line on Saturday when they welcome in Stanislaus State for another CCAA showdown.
