SAN FRANCISCO -- After leading by as many as 15 in the first half, the Cal State East Bay women's basketball team held off SF State's late comeback attempt and pulled off a 64-58 win over the Gators at the Swamp Friday evening.
The Pioneers have now won seven of their last nine, improving their record to 12-7 with an 8-5 mark in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. They complete the season sweep of SF State, having already beaten the Gators 59-49 in Hayward the week of Thanksgiving.
Sophomore
Morgan Greene, who has captured the last two CCAA Player of the Week awards, turned in a typically outstanding performance, notching her 14th double-double with 15 points and 16 rebounds. The nation's No. 3 rebounder at 12.8 per game, she has now recorded at least 15 boards seven times this season.
The Pioneers were red hot to start the game, racking up 25 points in the opening quarter and shooting 63 percent from the field in the first half.
Kayley Hsiung and
Kayla Blair each hit their first two attempts from long distance as the Pioneers made seven of their first 12 three-pointers. East Bay led by eight after the first period and stretched it out to 15 midway through the second before a late rally by the Gators sent the Pioneers to halftime ahead 41-31.
The visitors appeared to be tight coming out of the break, and all of a sudden lost their shooting touch. The Pioneers managed just eight points in the third period as SFSU chipped away at their deficit. After a steal and a jumper in transition to beat the third quarter buzzer, the Gators trailed by just three.
Two straight buckets to open the fourth gave the home team its first lead at 51-49. The game remained tight the entire rest of the way, and it appeared all the momentum was on the Gators's side. With just over four minutes left, Tyitenaya Jefferson scored three of her game-high 18 points on a long ball to put SF State up by five, their largest advantage of the night.
Elayshia Woolridge was quiet on the offensive end most of the evening, but as has been her calling card, she stepped up huge in the final minutes. Next time down the court, Woolridge missed a jumper, but got her own rebound, and scored in traffic to pull East Bay back within three. Two minutes later, after the Gators went 1-for-2 at the foul line, Woolridge buried a three-pointer to make it a one-point game.Â
The Pioneers forced a turnover on the next possession, giving them the ball back with less than a minute remaining. Senior
Janae Chamois was 1-for-7 from long distance at that point, but that didn't stop her from firing it up when the game was on the line. As the shot clock ticked down, Chamois hit nothing but net from beyond the arc, putting the Pioneers up 60-58 with just 34 seconds left.Â
Greene stole the ball from the Gators on the other end, and then
Kincso Kelemen went 4-for-4 at the free throw line in the final 18 seconds to seal the win.
The Pioneers ended up shooting 45.3 percent from the field, going 9-for-26 from long range, and out-rebounding the Gators 34-31 as they overcame 19 turnovers.Â
Greene finished 7-for-11 from the field, improving her CCAA-best field goal percentage to .558 this season. She also notched a team-high five steals.Â
Blair reached double figures for the third time in her last four games, scoring 14 points on 6-for-12 shooting to go along with seven rebounds. Woolridge and Kelemen tallied seven points apiece, and Chamois and Hsiung each added six. Woolridge dished out a team-high three assists as well.Â
The Pioneers are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Rohnert Park to try to finish off a season sweep of Sonoma State, with tip-off set for 5:30 p.m.
