SAN FRANCISCO -- The Cal State East Bay men's cross country team turned in another promising performance in its second meet of the 2017 season, taking fourth place Friday afternoon at the SF State Invitational.Â
The Pioneers navigated the familiar Speedway Meadows course at Golden Gate Park well, finishing ahead of seven schools in the 11-team field, including conference rival Humboldt State and the host Gators. East Bay had the best finish of the three California Collegiate Athletic Association squads at the meet.
CSUEB has all seven of its scoring runners finish in the top 40 overall, with a pair of individuals placing inside the top 20. Sophomore
Leo Skellenger led the way, taking 13th place overall and second among CCAA runners. He ran a personal best 8k time of 25:38.6, which moves him up to 10th place on the program's all-time list.
Senior
Chris Lessard took 19th place as the fourth CCAA finisher, posting a time of 26:01.9. He was followed by sophomore
Pedro Cruz (26:07.0), who placed 26th.
Esteban Leon (26:23.2) finished 31st,
Alberto Venegas (26:31.1) finished 35th,
Israel Sotelo (26:43.1) placed 39th, and
Miguel Morales (26:44.6) took 40th to round out the team scoring for East Bay.
Th Pioneers had several other runners make early-season strides at the local meet, led by a strong effort from senior
Zach Kanlong in 43rd place with a time of 26:53.1.
Jesus Leon finished 51st in 27:15.4, followed by
Luke Laehy (28:03.8) in 62nd,
Jeremy Shaw (28:32.6) in 72nd, and
Cameron Olson (29:16.5) in 83rd place in the field of over 100 runners.
