HAYWARD, Calif., -- The Cal State East Bay women's soccer team will open up California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action with two home games Humboldt State and Sonoma State.
WEEK IN REVIEW
The Pioneers are currently sitting 2-3 so far on the season with a 1-1 record at Pioneer Stadium. East Bay completed the three game road trip with losses to Dominican and Notre Dame De Namur and a win over Fresno Pacific.
Against Dominican, the game was tightly contested as both teams were nearly even in shot attempts and saves. The Penguins outshot the Pioneers 11-10 including six shots on goal to three from CSUEB. But East Bay recorded four saves to just three from Dominican.
Both of the Penguin goals came late in the game as they scored their first in the 81st minute of play and again in the 84th minutes of game action.
In the loss to the Argonauts, NDNU held the advantage in shots 15-7 including an 8-4 shot on goal edge. Both teams both recorded four saves. The Argonauts held a 1-0 lead at halftime after putting in a shot in the 25th minute of action. NDNU would add three more goals in the second half of play with scores in the 46th, 61st and 78th minutes of play.
In the win over Fresno Pacific, East Bay scored the first three goals of the match before Fresno Pacific fought back with two second half scores of their own.
The Pioneers used the deep ball as a key factor to their offensive attack which is what helped score the first goal of the night. The lone goal of the first half came as
Janelle Herrera connected with
Aulani Fernandez on a long pass and Fernandez answered with a header to the back of the net.
Fernandez was just getting started to her hot offensive night. For Herrera, it was her first assist of the 2017 season.
CSUEB would take their 1-0 lead into the half, but would remain aggressive offensively after the intermission. The Pioneers would add to their lead twice with back-to-back goals within six minutes to claim a 3-0 advantage.
In the 54th minute of action sophomore
Carsyn Hoogendoorn led junior
Miranda Gonzalez with a perfect cross leading to Gonzalez winning a one-on-one for the Pioneers second score. It was Gonzalez's first goal of the season as well as the first assist of the year for Hoogendoorn.
Six minutes later Fernandez struck again for the Pioneers as
Allison Smith placed a flawless corner kick to an open Aulani Fernnadez for her second goal of the evening. It was the first assist of the season for Smith and the first multi-score game of Fernandez's career.
Both teams attempted 13 shots apiece but East Bay had a 9-6 shot on goal advantage over the Sunbirds. Fresno Pacific did come away with two more saves than CSUEB.
FERNANDEZ'S FURIOUS FINISHES
Junior
Aulani Fernandez, a native of Brentwood, Calif., currently leads the Pioneers with three goals on the year. Fernandez's three goals are tied for fourth in the CCAA. Her six points currently sits in 6th place in the conference. Fernandez two-goal game against Fresno Pacific was the first multi-goal performance of her Pioneer career.
GONZALEZ GIANT IN GOAL
Freshman
Ina Gonzalez has Showed tremendous promise thus far in the net this season. Gonzalez has appeared in four game making three starts. She has logged 11 saves through 42 shots faced. She sits 10th in the CCAA with a 2.75 save per game average.
SCOUTING HUMBOLDT STATE
Humboldt State enters the weekend undefeated at 3-0 with wins over Colorado Mesa, Fresno Pacific and Oregon Tech. Alex Jenkins leads the Lumberjacks with three goals, including a CCAA leading three game-winning goals. In goal, Katelin Talbert has started all three matches and has recorded 15 saves with two shutouts.
SCOUTING SONOMA STATE
Sonoma State comes into the weekend tied for the best record in the CCAA. They are unbeaten with wins over Fresno Pacific, Colorado Mesa, Dixie State, Azuza Pacific and Southern Oregon. Sara Van Wagoner, Bella Amyx and Alexis Espitia all lead the Seawolves with two goals apiece. Cecilia Sifuentes paces the team with two assists. Kristen Spear has started all five games in goal recording 20 saves and three shutout victories.
