Pioneers Suffer Setback to Warriors in Series Opener

HAYWARD, Calif. – The Cal State East Bay baseball team dropped its California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) series opener to North Division rivals Stanislaus State by a score of 5-2 on Thursday afternoon, May 4 at Pioneer Baseball Field.
 
The Pioneers fall to 24-22 on the season with a 15-19 mark in CCAA action while the Warriors improve to 32-15 and 21-14 in conference play.
 
East Bay fell behind 3-0 after the opening inning for game action before scoring two runs of their own in the bottom of the second frame. After Troy Resch walked to lead off the inning Matt Cantelme put the Pioneers in the hit column with a line drive double down the left side. On the next at bat Colt Parshall belted to two-run single to left field bringing home Resch and Cantelme.
 
Matt Cantelme finished the game 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Colt Parshall complied two hits and two RBIs while Tory Resch added a run scored for the Pioneers.
 
The Warriors added another run in the top of the fourth inning to claim a 4-2 advantage.
 
Pioneer starter Alex Vesia (L, 4-6) battled through 5.2 innings, racking up three strikeouts with no walks.
 
Evan Steele and Marcus Wise also turned in multi-hit outings for CSUEB. Steele tallied two hits while Wise completed the game with two hits, including a double.
 
Pioneer relief pitchers Joshua Kubiske and Nick Risucci both turned in great performances in limited time on the mound. Kubiske gave up three hits, with no runs scored and a strikeout through 2.1 innings tossed. Risucci pitched the entire ninth inning picking up two strikeouts with no hits or walks given up.
 
As a team the Pioneers tallied 11 hits in the loss. Dallas Dey added a hit and East Bay's lone stolen base. Daniel Goodrich (1-for-3) put a double to center field and Zack Perugi also compiled a hit for CSUEB.
 
The Pioneers will return to action of Friday afternoon, May 5 for game two of their four-game home series finale against Stanislaus State. The game will begin at 3:00 p.m. at Pioneer Baseball Field.
