STOCKTON, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay men's golf team will play for the NCAA Division II National Championship in two weeks after finishing in a tie for third place on Wednesday in the 20-team Regional field at Brookside Country Club.Â
The Pioneers posted their third straight under-par score in the third round, carding 286 (-2) to finish the 54-hole tournament at 847 (-17). California Baptist (-33) out-paced the rest of the field to capture the Regional Championship. Stanislaus State (-19), Western Washington (-17), and Cal State Monterey Bay (-16) also advance to Nationals as top-five finishers at the West/South-Central Regional.
Scores were low across the board this week, but the Pioneers were up to the task at the same course where they finished as runner-up at CCAA Championships two years ago. This week, East Bay led the entire field with 65 total birdies.
CCAA Player of the Year
Adam Stone finished in a tie for eighth place individually. The senior shot even par 72 for a three-round total of 207 (-9), putting him siz strokes behind the individual champion.Â
Fellow senior
Joel Keylor was the key to CSUEB's outstanding performance this week. He started thing off Monday with a 66, his best round of the season. Then on Wednesday, amidst a tight battle for the top five spots, Keylor fired a 69 (-3), shooting four under par on the back nine and birdying three of his last four holes. He ended up with a share of 11th place in the overall field of 100 golfers, his highest individual finish of the 2016-17 season.
Sophomore
Jonathan Mulvany turned in a solid 72 (E) to close out his week at 221 (+5) in a tie for 72nd place.
Owen Hutchison notched a 73 (+1) to contribute the fourth score to CSUEB's team total on Wednesday. The senior placed 64th overall with a total of 219 (+30).
Senior
Chad Hall finished sandwiched between Hutchison and Mulvany tied for 69th place at 220 (+4) for the week after shooting 75 (+3) in the final round.Â
The Pioneers will now spend the next week preparing for a return trip to Reunion Resort in Kissimmee, Fla., where they began the 2016-17 season back in the Fall at the NCAA Preview Tournament. Division II National Championships begin Monday, May 22, consisting of a 54-hole stroke play tournament with the top eight teams advancing to the medal rounds.
