TURLOCK, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay men's golf team closed out its regular season schedule this week with an eighth place finish in the Hanny Stanislaus Invitational at Turlock Golf and Country Club.
The Pioneers shot 299-299-302 at the three-round tournament for a total score of 900 (+36). Sonoma State rallied in Tuesday's final rounds to win the event at 875 (+11), one stroke ahead of Chico State (+12) and Concordia-Portland (+12).
East Bay topped seven schools in the 15-team field that included six of the top 10 squads in the West according to last week's NCAA Division II Regional Rankings.
Reigning CCAA Player of the Week
Adam Stone was CSUEB's top individual in the regular season finale. He was outstanding in round two, firing the low score of the week for East Bay with a 70 (-2). Stone sandwiched a 76 (+4) and a 65 (+3) around that to finish tied for 17th place at 221 (+5).
Owen Hutchison turned in one excellent round as well, shooting even-par 72 on Monday morning. But he followed that up with 77 (+5) and 76 (+4) in the next to rounds to finish with a share of 26th place at 225 (+9).
Fellow senior
Chad Hall got off to a strong start as well, but he stumbled in the third round on Tuesday. Hall carded 72-75-80 to finish the 54-hole event at 227 (+11), tied for 34th place in the overall field of 83 golfers.
After a slow start on Monday with round of 79 and 77,
Joel Keylor fired CSUEB's best round today with a 73 (+1) to move up the leaderboard into a tie for 42nd at 229 (+13).
Jonathan Mulvany rounded out East Bay's team performance with back-to-back rounds of 78 (+6) after withdrawing from the first round of play.
The Pioneers also sent three individuals to Turlock. Freshman
Chris Carney led the way, shooting 76-76-74 to finish tied for 30th overall at 226 (+10). He was one stroke ahead of fellow rookie
Max Murai, who carded 76-77-74 for a total of 227 (+11).
Raja Deal finished in a tie for 71st place at 242 (+26) after shooting 79-83-80.Â
Head coach
Alan Sue will have some tough decisions to make with his deep, veteran roster as the Pioneers now prepare to defend their CCAA Championship in two weeks. There appears to be a tight battle between Mulvany, Keylor, Carney, and Murai for the fourth and fifth spots on the championship roster, and all four turned in similar scores this week. The Pioneers, who are currently ranked No. 5 in the West, will have a couple weeks to get it sorted out as they try to go for back-to-back titles.
