SANTEE, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay men's golf team completed a tough week at the 67th annual SoCal Intercollegiate, taking 12th place in the 15-team tournament, which is hosted by UC San Diego at Canyon Oaks Country Club.Â
The Pioneers posted their lowest team finish of the 2016-17 season as well as their highest 54-hole score, totaling 921 (+57) at the 72-hole course.
Dixie State won the tournament at 881 (+17), followed closely by Cal State San Marcos in second (+19) and Cal State Monterey Bay in third (+25).
Junior
Chad Hall led the Pioneers individually, taking a share of 34th place in the overall field of 75 golfers. He shot 75 (+3) in the first and third rounds, sandwiched around a 78 (+6) on Monday afternoon, to finish at 228 (+12) for the week.
Freshman
Max Murai carded CSUEB's lowest round of the tournament with a 73 (+1) in the opening round. He followed that up a 79 (+7) in the second round and an 80 (+8) on Tuesday for a total of 232 (+16).Â
Murai finished tied for 45th place overall, just ahead of senior
Adam Stone in 47th. The four-time CCAA Player of the Week and No. 4 ranked golfer in Division II battled illness this week. After shooting back-to-back rounds of 76 (+4) on Monday, he turned in an 81 (+9) this morning. Stone finished one stroke behind Murai at 233 (+17).Â
Jonathan Mulvany was solid in the final round today with a 75 (+3), but he stumbled on the first day of the event, carding 83-78. The sophomore ended up with a share of 58th place at 236 (+20) overall.Â
Senior
Owen Hutchison had his most challenging week of the season as well. After a first-round 75 (+3), he carded 80 (+8) and 83 (+3) in the next two rounds to finish in a tie for 61st place with a total of 238 (+22).Â
The Pioneers had been outstanding in 2016-17 prior to this event, reaching the No. 17 ranking in the nation according to Golfstat. With just two tournaments left before the team attempts to defend its CCAA Championship, East Bay will look to bounce back next week at Western New Mexico University's annual Mustang Intercollegiate in Goodyear, Ariz.
