Pioneer Softball Takes Road Trek South To Battle Cougars

 HAYWARD, Calif. – The Cal State East Bay softball team will travel south to continue their California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) road trek with a weekend series against Cal State San Marcos. The Pioneers will play doubleheaders on Friday, March 3 and Saturday, March 4.
 
Friday's doubleheader will begin at 1:00 p.m. and Saturday's doubleheader will start at 11:00 a.m. All games will be played at CSUSM Softball Field.
 
WEEK IN REVIEW
The Pioneers finished their weekend series against #10 Chico State with a 1-3 mark. East Bay closed the weekend series with a huge 12-7 victory as the Pioneers scored early and often, tallying multiple runs in each of the first four innings. They ended up scoring 12 runs on 12 hits and took advantage of three Wildcat errors in the blowout win.
 
East Bay opened the game with three straight s, as senior Ali Cerminara knocked in the first run with a single through the hole. The Pioneers had a 2-0 after the top of the first, but the Wildcats answered back with four runs in the bottom of the innings, stringing five hits together against CSUEB starter Olivia McWhorter.
 
Head coach Claire Sua-Amundson turned to Bailee Glover out of the bullpen, who escaped the inning, then proceeded to hang five straight zeroes on the scoreboard to allow the Pioneer offense to go to work. 
 
East Bay scored four runs in the second to re-take the lead, as Marisa Lerma and Tanya Galvan both ripped two-run singles. They tacked on three more in the third on an RBI double by Courtney Leyba, followed by a two-run home run by Sarah Fukushima  It was Fukushima's team-leading fifth round-tripper of the year.

After a pair of walks to start off the fourth, Haley Keahi drove in a run with a single up the middle, and then the Pioneers scored again on a double steal. 

The visitors led 12-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh when Chico finally got to Glover for three runs, taking advantage of three walks and a hit-by-pitch. Greer then made her second appearance of the day with two outs and struck out Kristin Worley to end the game. 

Glover struck out four and allowed three runs on just two hits over 6.0 innings of relief to earn her second victory.

Fukushima finished 3-for-5 and scored three runs to lead the way offensively. Leyba had two hits and crossed home plate three times out of the leadoff spot, and senior Ashley Allen also notched multiple hits going 2-for-3.
 
 
 
PIONEER POINTS
The Pioneers are off to a 7-5 start with a 3-5 mark in CCAA action. East Bay is undefeated at Pioneer Softball Field and unbeaten outside of conference play.
 
The Pioneers lead the the conference with 14 home runs (14). East Bay is currently 4th with 81 runs scored, 3rd with 158 total bases and a .485 slugging percentage.
 
CSUEB is 5th in the CCAA with a .301 batting average, 6th with 98 hits and 3rd with 70 RBIs.
 
Senior Marisa Lerma is 18th in the CCAA batting .406 through 12 games. She is tied for the team lead with 13 hits. Lerma has racked up six runs, 11 RBIs 21 total bases and two home run blasts. She is slugging .656 through 12 starts this season, 13th in the CCAA. Lerma is also 4th in the conference with a .578 on-base percentage.
 
Junior Ashley Allen is 12th in the conference batting .419 so far on the season. She has a team leading 13 hits and 10 runs scored. Allen has compiled 14 total bases, three RBIs and a .452 slugging percentage.
 
Freshman Jennifer Palmares currently has a .375 batting average. Palmares has tallied nine hits, six runs scored, 15 total bases and six RBIs. She is tied for 4th in the CCAA with three doubles and has hit one homer on the season with a .625 slugging percentage.
 
Sophomore Tanya Galvan has added nine hits, eight runs scored, eight RBIs and 11 total bases. She has a .243 batting average and a .297 slugging percentage. Galvan is tied for 4th in the conference with one triple.
 
Freshman Sarah Fukushima is 6th in the CCAA with a .769 slugging percentage and a team leading five home runs, which is 2nd in the conference. Fukushima has 13 hits, 12 runs scored and 30 total bases. Her 14 RBIs is 7th in the CCAA.
 
Ali Cerminara, the all-time leader in home runs, added to her career mark with two homers on the season (26). She also moved into 9th all-time with 28 doubles and 6th all-time with 95 RBIs. She is batting .286 with 10 hits, nine runs scored, eight RBIs, 17 total bases and a .486 slugging percentage.
 
Sophomore Courtney Leyba is second on the Pioneers with a .417 batting average, 13th in the CCAA. She is 9th in the conference with a .708 slugging percentage. Leyba has compiled 10 hits, nine runs scored, eight RBIs and 17 total bases through eight games played. She is 4th in the CCAA with four doubles.
 
East Bay is 5th in the CCAA with a 2.49 team ERA and 4th with a 73.0 innings tossed. The Pioneers are 4th in the conference with 38 strikeouts and 6th with seven wins.
 
Freshman Abby Greer is 5th in the CCAA with 1.52 ERA with a 3-3 record.  She was tossed 32.1 innings with three complete games, good for 7th in the in the conference. Greer's 20 strikeouts lead the Pioneers and are 6th in the CCAA.
 
Sophomore Bailee Glover has a record of 2-1 on the season as she has appeared in seven games making two starts. She is 10th the CCAA with a 1.97 ERA through 21.1 innings pitched. Glover is third on the Pioneers with eight strikeouts and had one save and one complete game so far on the season.
 
Freshman Olivia McWhorter has appeared in six game and is second on East Bay with four starts and 10 strikeouts. She has a 4.71 ERA with a 2-1 record. McWhorter has tossed 19.1 innings with two complete games.
 
SCOUTING CAL STATE SAN MARCOS
The Cal State San Marcos Cougars were picked to finish last in the 2017 Preseason Softball Coaches Poll. The Cougars are currently 2-9 on the season with a 1-5 mark in conference action. San Marcos split a twinbill with Azusa Pacific on February 24. Gabriela Arizaga leads the Cougars with a .429 batting average with a team leading 12 hits with five runs scored, four RBIs Abby Callais has nine hits with nine total bases and a .346 batting and slugging average for San Marcos.
 
The Pioneers spilt its doubleheader with the Cougars in 2016.
