LA JOLLA, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay women's basketball team notched a huge victory on Saturday night with an impressive performance on the road to beat UC San Diego 71-57 at RIMAC Arena.
Just one night after one of their worst games of the season at Cal State San Bernardino, the Pioneers (14-8, 11-4 CCAA) handed the first-place Tritons (17-4, 13-2 CCAA) just their second loss in California Collegiate Athletic Association play. The win also snapped UCSD's 13-game win streak.
East Bay used the long ball to erase an early deficit and ultimately take over in the second half. Despite a major 34-18 scoring advantage for the home team in the paint, the Pioneers out-shot UC San Diego 51.0 percent to 35.4 percent for the night. East Bay finished 10-for-22 from three-point range, as
Kayley Hsiung (4-for-7),
Janae Chamois (3-for-7), and
Bri Guillory (2-for-2) all had success from beyond the arc.Â
After a back-and-forth first quarter, the Tritons went on a scoring run midway through the second. They scored 10 straight points to take a 12-point lead -- their biggest of the game -- with just under four minutes left. But the Pioneers answered right back. Chamois buried a three the next time down the court to ignite a 14-4 run to close out the quarter. Guillory knocked down a triple just before the halftime buzzer to send East Bay to the break trailing by just two points.
The Pioneers kept that momentum going to start the third quarter. Hsiung hit a pair of three-pointers within the span of a minute, and CSUEB opened the second half on a 12-2 run. That gave them a 43-35 lead, and the Pioneers never looked back over the final 15 minutes. They held off UCSD's comeback attempts, stretching the lead out to 17 points near the end of the fourth.
Hsiung posted a career high with 16 points and three steals on 6-for-9 from the field.
Shomari Harris also scored 16 points, filling up the scoresheet with five rebounds and a team-high six assists.
Morgan Greene had an outstanding night as well, hitting some big shots down the stretch and finishing with 12 points on 4-for-6 shooting to go along with seven rebounds.Â
Chamois added nine points from beyond the arc, and
Bri Guillory tallied eight on a perfect 3-for-3 from the field.
Remy Puou had a tough shooting night, but the senior contributed seven rebounds and a block in 38 minutes.
The top of the CCAA standings has become a tight race as Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State San Bernardino, and Stanislaus State all swept their games this weekend to keep pace with the Pioneers. With their mark of 11-4, East Bay is two games behind UCSD and holds a one-game lead over the group tied for third. Next weekend, they return to Hayward to host SF State and Sonoma State to cap off Homecoming week.
