Pioneers Hold Off Seawolves to Open Homecoming Weekend With Win

HAYWARD, Calif. – The Cal State East Bay women's basketball team picked up their fourth straight home win and 10 out of their last 12 with their 60-54 win over Sonoma State to kick off the Homecoming weekend home slate.

With the win, the Pioneers improved 15-8 on the season and 12-4 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action. East Bay swept the season series over the Seawolves after they defeated Sonoma State 63-46 in Rohnert Park on December 31, 2016.

The Pioneers controlled the game from the tip as they never trailed by more the four points. Morgan Greene paced the Pioneers as she notched her fourth double-double of the season scoring 14 points and grabbing 12 rebounds, both team highs. Greene routinely displayed Olajuwon like footwork around the basket as she finished the game 6-for-9 shooting from the floor. She added an assist and a block on a team best 37 minutes.

East Bay outscored Sonoma State in every quarter after trailing 15-9 after the first period of play. Shomari Harris, the reigning two-time CCAA Player of the Week, was the other Pioneer to score in double figures with 12 points. Harris dished out a game high five assists, grabbed four rebounds and knocked down five of her six foul shots.

The East Bay bench outscored the Sonoma State bench 18-9 and Janae Chamois led the Pioneer second charge with nine points and two rebounds on 3-for-7 shooting from three-point range. Elayshia Woolridge tallied seven points, four rebounds and two assists in 22 minutes off the bench.

The Pioneers also outscored the Seawolves in paint points 30-20 and out rebounded them 38-26. Senior Remy Puou was a force in the painted area as she muscled her way to eight points and five rebounds on 4-for-5 shooting from the field.

The Pioneer largest lead of seven points came in the second half as they shot 48.0 percent from the field and 80.0 percent from the charity stripe after intermission. The stifling Pioneer defense in the second half held the Seawolves to 34.8 percent accuracy from the floor and 33.3 percent from three-point land.

Kylie Kiech led the Seawolves with 14 points and four rebounds. Madison Burroughs also scored 14 points with six rebounds to pace Sonoma State.

The Pioneers will complete their Homecoming 2017 slate when the host the visiting San Francisco State Gators on Saturday, February 11 in Pioneer Gymnasium. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
