HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay women's basketball team has won eight of its last nine games after picking up a 60-50 victory over visiting San Francisco State on Saturday night at Pioneer Gym.
The Pioneers improve to 16-8 overall with a 13-4 mark in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) games, as they maintain their hold on second place in the standings. As a program, CSUEB is now 38-8 in its last 46 CCAA games dating back to 2015.
The Gators have now lost 17 straight games to drop their record to 2-21, but they kept this contest tight nearly the entire evening. The teams shot similar percentages from the field, and the Pioneers struggled badly from long range (1-for-16). However, East Bay dominated the glass to the tune of a 46-33 rebounding advantage. They also finished with a 36-12 edge on points in the paint.Â
The front court duo of
Remy Puou and
Morgan Greene led the way, combining for a ridiculous 29 rebounds.
The Pioneers turned in stout defense in the first half, but led by just six points at the intermission after shooting 29 percent in the first two quarters. They improved that to 43 percent in the final two quarters, led by
Shomari Harris, who scored 13 of her 17 points in the second half. Harris finished 7-for-15 from the floor and led the team with three assists and three steals.Â
The Gators drew within two points with six minutes left in the third, but the Pioneers answered with a 9-0 run and never looked back.Â
Puou posted her third double-double of the season with 17 points and 14 boards. Greene matched her career high with 15 rebounds and went 3-for-6 from the field for seven points.Â
Elayshia Woolridge also scored seven points in 26 minutes off the bench.
Bri Guillory added five points, and
Shontalene Trudeau turned in four points and five rebounds in 16 minutes.Â
The red hot Pioneers have now clinched a spot in the CCAA Tournament for the sixth straight year, but they have their sights set higher. East Bay will hit the road next weekend for the final time in the regular season when they visit Cal State San Marcos on Saturday evening.
