SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The reigning California Collegiate Athletic Assiociation champion Cal State East Bay women's basketball team clinched a home playoff game in the first round of their sixth consecutive CCAA Tournament with their 81-68 road win over Cal State San Marcos on the road Saturday night.
With the win East Bay improves to 17-8 on the season and 14-4 in CCAA action. This was the fourth straight for the Pioneers and their ninth win in their last ten games. CSUEB swept the season series over the Cougars after a 59-44 victory in Pioneer Gymnasium on January 5.
Two Pioneers notched double doubles led by senior center
Remy Puou's 19 points and career high 20 rebounds on 8-for-16 shooting from the floor. She swatted a career best five shots and tallied three steals in 36 minutes of action. Her 20 rebounds is the highest total by a Pioneer since the program joined the CCAA in 2009-10, surpassing Marlene MacMillan's previous high of 19 from January 2012.
Freshman forward
Morgan Greene also recorded a double double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Greene went 4-for-5 from the charity stripe with an assist and two steals in 22 minutes on the court.
East Bay dominated the paint action as they out-rebounded San Marcos 57-34 and outscored the Cougars in paint points 42-23.
The Pioneers controlled the game early jumping out to a 21-6 lead after the first period of play. East Bay shot 52.6 percent in the first half of action while limiting San Marcos to just 36.6 percent accuracy from the field. Both teams shot below 35 percent in the second half as the Pioneers finished the game shooting 42.6 percent and the Cougars shot 35.4 percent for the game.
Senior point guard
Shomari Harris, two-time CCAA Player of the Week, also tallied double figures 11 points, a team high three assists, two rebounds and two steals. She played 36 minutes and scored in double figures for the tenth consecutive game.
The Pioneer bench outscored the Cougar bench 31-30 paced by 12 points, two rebounds and two steals from
Elayshia Woolridge.
Kayley Hsiung,
Janae Chamois and
Bri Guillory all scored eight points apiece for CSUEB. Hsiung added five rebounds, two blocks and a steal in 25 minutes.
Chamois and Guillory each put in their eight point efforts to help the Pioneers bench contribution. Both players went a perfect 2-for-2 from three-point land as Chamois finished with two assists and Guillory chipped in three rebounds and an assist.
Senior forward
Shontalene Trudeau grabbed a season best 10 rebounds with three points, an assist and a steal.
Brianna Porter led the Cougars with 19 points and four rebounds. Savannah Camp added 15 points and five assists for San Marcos.
East Bay still has a chance to clinched the top overall seed in the upcoming CCAA Tournament with two home games left in the regular season.
The Pioneers will conclude the 2016-17 regular season by hosting the Chico State Wildcats on Friday, February 24 and welcoming Stanislaus State on Saturday, February 25. The game against Chico State will be "Pink Night" and Saturday's game against Stanislaus State will be "Senior Night" as East Bay will be honoring it's three seniors. Both games are set to tip at 5:30 p.m. in Pioneer Gymnasium.
