HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay women's basketball team has won five straight and 10 of its last 11 after holding on for a 58-50 win over visiting Chico State on Friday evening at Pioneer Gymnasium.
The Pioneers improve to 18-8 overall and 15-4 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. With Stanislaus State's loss tonight, East Bay has clinched the No. 2 seed in next week's CCAA Tournament. Their first round game will be Tuesday, Feb. 28 at 6 p.m. at home against either Chico State or Sonoma State, both of whom have played the Pioneers tough this season.
On this night, CSUEB out-shot the Wildcats 42.1 percent to 35.3 percent from the field, and they out-rebounded Chico 36-31. However, the Pioneers struggled from three-point range (4-for-18), and the visitors made enough buckets to keep the game close. There were a few instances when East Bay extended its lead to double figures, but each time Chico made a few big shots to prevent the Pioneers from pulling away.Â
With five minutes to go in the game, the Pioneers led by just two. But they locked down on defense down the stretch, and didn't allow a single point over the final 5:10 of game time.Â
The Pioneers got an outstanding performance from reigning CCAA Player of the Week
Remy Puou, who led all players with 20 points in the game. She dominated the paint, finishing 10-for-13 from the floor in 31 minutes before fouling out.Â
Freshman
Kincso Kelemen provided a crucial lift offensively, scoring 10 points in 16 minutes on 4-for-6 from the field. She knocked down two from beyond the arc. The Wildcats did an effective job of bottling up
Shomari Harris, the CCAA's leading scorer, but she nonetheless notched 10 points and dished out a game-high six assists.
Like Puou, freshman
Morgan Greene dealt with foul trouble all night. She played just 14 minutes and made one field goal, but she made the most of her time on the court. Greene racked up 11 rebounds in those 14 minutes, including five on the offensive end. The Phoenix, Ariz. native is the conference's top rebounder heading into Saturday's regular season finale at 9.5 per game.Â
Senior Shonatalene Trudeau gave the Pioneers a big contribution off the bench, posting six points, six rebounds, and three assists in 25 minutes. Guards
Bri Guillory and
Elayshia Woolridge added four points apiece.
Next up, the Pioneers celebrate "Senior Night" on Saturday with a pre-game ceremony prior to their last regular season game, which tips off at 5:30 p.m. vs. Stanislaus State.Â
